From Kansas to Chad Africa

Post by $c0oBa »

A man from Chad Africa has been staying at the hotel I work for. He is the
aviation mechanic for a missionary plane,so he is over here taking classes.
The other day he was showing me pictures of where he lives and the people he works with. This is when I had noticed the children over there didn't have much to do, but seemed to be happy with what they do have.
It was at this time a  popped in my little head. I asked if they have
ever played with a frisbee and offered to bring some of my frisbees and
flippier disc. This guy's eyes lite up ,kinda like this  ,he had told me that they would just love this, that they are indeed board children. So I guess I'm asking for anyone who has old frisbees or flippy golf disc that they are willing to part with let me know. I will be receiving the gentlemen's E mail address for future shipping to Chad Africa.

Spread the love of the Frisbee :D :D :D

I am sure I have some laying around here! Great idea Steve. You could add some other stuff to your box, if you like...

We went to Mexico on Spring Break to build a house for a needy family. We brought soccer balls, jump ropes, hard candy, Frisbees, and a bunch of other junk. The kids loved it. That kind of stuff would not add much cost at all, but would add fun to them. Just throwing that out (if you want to send just discs, that's fine with me!). Do you want me to send these to you?

Steve:

Cool idea. 8)

Make certain that you announce this at club tonight. :D

Do you have a target date for shipment?

We will need a mailing address also.

I have the gentlemens E mail address and that is about it. This is what I'm
thinking. I have heard that the Red Cross has a service for donations to be
delivered, So if maybe we can send everything to a remote destination maybe even a drop off at club or the Red Cross facility. I took the man some of my older discs and regular frisbees today, he was very excited
about this whole deal. I had explained the differences between a frisbee and a disc, and most importantly don't let them play catch with a disc. I told him about different games we play with the catch frisbee, and that I
would keep in touch by E mail to see what kind of games these creative minds will invent. Then I started explaining the different ways to throw the
disc (left, straight, right, roller) and it sounds like the roller will be popular over there.
They play a game with bicycle tire and a stick and see how long they can keep it going for, just wait till they roll those Stratus' I gave them
Anyways I don't have a targeted delivery time yet, I'd like to have some ready to go in a month or so, I'm gonna donate one of my homemade baskets, this will give the gentleman a idea of what he can do with empty barrels we were talking about.
So let's get this together and make it happen and Don is right if there is anything else you would be willing to part with to keep these children busy, please do.

Anita, how about if we send one those LFDC 150 Leopards or Rocs. Maybe a disc from the hard to sell pile too, hmmm, but which brand? :)

I put the word out at club last night. It sounds like there will be some interest by the guys. Jerry mentioned that he may have some old discs to donate. I'll have to check my inventory.

I had talked to the gentleman yesterday he told me there are approx.
twenty children at their mission. I have at least sent 5 catch frisbees, and
10 disc, mostly mid-range, so if we can gather another 30 disc this should
give them enough variety they can play with a few disc each. I was told these children can get to fighting over toys, so sending variety might help.
I was also told not to send my basket I was going to donate because it would probably get stolen. Doesn't seem like there will be a problem
gathering the rest of these disc, oh yeah more catch frisbees would be nice, but if there is anything else you think these children could use:
balls, bicycle rims(spokeless),dolls, but nothing that could the children
lightweight clothing(dresses for the girls),Sandals, etc. I heard that these children wear there clothing until it is falling apart.
I appreciate all your replies to this forum, and will keep posting to make this happen.

if you can't send a basket how about finding a way to translate from english to the language they speak , the instructions for playing disc golf useing safe objects? At least then they would understand why the difference in catch discs and golf discs. even explaining the difference in drivers and mid range and putters. give them a toy and they will play with it for a couple days or weeks. give them a game and they will take it with them there whole lives.

Lizard, I gave the gentleman a PDGA rule book and explained that he just
needs to teach them the basics and that the courtesy section was important. We talked about different objects he can use for targets, they have trees and empty barrels. Also explained other games for the catch frisbee(Bocce, Ultimate basics, even MTA.) Being honest I want to see what kinda games they invent. :)
