Aspen is a potential gold mine!....but that's for a different board.
I got there in time for Friday doubles. I got the TD (I thought he said his name was Scott but it show's Bill Wright on the web) as my partner. We shot an even round. Hot round was one under. There were two of those. There were 20 + teams.
This course is only for the semi in shape. The hardest part for me was learning that every under stable disc I have is now extremely over stable. First throw I through an old beat up Beast and it flew like a new Ram. That's when Scott/Bill/my partner told me someone's changed all my discs and they're now all very over stable. I also had a lot of trouble throwing down and up the mountain. Throwing down I would throw way to high and the disc would sale away. Fun to watch but had my partner cussing me. Throwing up I'd throw to low. Throwing across the mountain I was fine...unless I'd forget how stable my roc had become and it'd break away from the mountain. So as long as I was throwing a hole where the disc would break into the mountain I was golden. About four holes.
The only discs you need to play this course is a Roc/Buzzz and a putter. We didn't play the four "extreme holes". I did take a picture of the "Kiss It Goodbye" hole 19. It's, I don't know how many 1,000 ft down hill, and when you go left, which it will, it's off the side of the mountain into the abyss. It's not coming home! It'll fly off into the sunset and disappear.
You couldn't play this course with out a guide. The pads are not marked well at all. Two memorable holes are one down hill hole that's around 1,000ft. You can easily blow by with a roc/buzz or sale way left onto another slope. What goes down must come up. A few holes later is "The Wall" hole. It's straight up the side of a double black. The walk up that is brutal!
It'd be fun to organize a trip for a bunch of us KS boys to go out there and show off our flat land skills. I think we could find a cheap motel in Aspen for around $1,600 a night. At that rate we could squeeze about 35 of us in a room. I get the bed!
Camping would be an option but you have to have at least a 5' high hard sided camper. Tents and pop up campers don't do much to detour bears.
I highly recommend checking this course out if/when you get a chance. Put it on your "must play before dieing" list.
Also played the brand new 18 hole course in Poncha Springs (close to Salida). This course is less then a year old and a five minute walk from our cabin. It's short and technical. Brand new Mach III baskets and triangular tee pads. Another must play if your in South Central CO.

Dillons about as far away as our cabin in Salida. 2 + hours.Sandman wrote:What if we stayed in Dillon(sp)??? If we sleep two to a bed and wife promises not to hog the covers we could sleep about 14 people in the cabin. Another problem is if the weather turns bad you can't get there from Salida. You can from Dillon but you have to go a lot farther down I-70.
Independence Pass is white knuckle close your eyes driving. I like to have a few beers before driving it to help relax me. Beer keeps my body from realizing I'm passing out in the altitude. Seems to help my reflexes too. We'd be better off trying to find a place in Carbondale, El Jebel, or Snowmass.
