Also, should a qualifier for the finals be an invitational event, even in the slightest? It doesn't seem like it would be an issue, but if the Elks club event grows in the future it sure could be.The first year that we used tournament qualifiers we calculated who won the tournament qualifiers after the points were figured for the event. In other words, the top third was re-figured after the event to then determine which players were eligible to receive the tournament qualifier. While this might be a more fair approach, it is more difficult to figure up (espescially right before awards/banquet), and more confusing to the players as they don't know exactly who they are going up against. There is a reverse scenario that could potentially be unfair as well. Say a player who isn't in the top third beats all the non-top-third players in his division, but a different player gets knocked out of the top-third and he doesn't beat this player. If the top third was refigured prior to awarding tourney qualifiers, this person bumped out would get the spot and the player who thought he had won it would not. Same situation, different perspective.
The way the qualification reads now is pretty clear. If you are currently in the top third, you can lose your spot. It isn't protected until the end. But if at a tournament qualifier you beat the other players in your division that were not in the top third before the event: you are qualified and cannot lose it.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
Re: 2009 # of Tourneys per Member
This is the first year for the Elks to be a qualifier. I also don't think that it is going to fill, so it will not be an issue this year. Down the road when the Elks is bigger and is once again a qualifier something will have to give.
Mace and I talked about this exact thing several weeks ago.
