I forgot to thank a ton of people yesterday. I won't list you all but just know that I am aware of the big and small ways that this DG community rallies behind this tournament and my magical home course. Thank You. I am proud of this event. And I am proud of you for the ways in which you support it and me. Whether you've talked me through something or just listened; given your time or talent, merchandise, money or feedback; or simply told someone what you love about 1880, Thank You.

Number 5 was the best DUBS yet. I plan on saying the same thing about Number 6. I'm trusting you to get my back. How are we going to make it better?

Hey alright, that's a cheesy photo but sunrise at the Hawk was pretty magical this morning. Please don't let the instagram-edness of that photo detract from the message. I mean it. Hit me with some feedback.

Newton Discount Liquor's $150 got sipped and gulped all day long. 3 CTPs and a Long Putt worth $15 each went to the Spoons, the Randys, the Spoons, and ?? (I think maybe the Spoons again on hole 18?). The Happy Accidents put down 40 dollars worth of the Top Shelf Tough Shot Chaser. And the Alt Shot Side Pot got divvied up 8 ways (Holiday Inn's donated theirs) by the Spoons, Fusions, Floyds, McGruffs, Sharks, Jazzners, BVDs, and the Pu$$ycats-- $8 each.

-----------!! Today I Learned that the forum autocorrects P U S S Y C A T S to "kitties" !! Seriously. Try it. ------------

7 teams took home a pair of matching discs for having the Best Worst drive on the 4 tough shot holes--Bandits, Fusions, Randys, Happy Accidents, McGruffs & the Throw Downs. Pinterests took home 2 pairs!

Over half of the teams took home some type of prize. And that's not counting the awesome Raffle which saw a dozen-ish collectible discs, a few pairs of socks and 2 bags brighten someone's day. Vierthaler (of course) won the Flak 4 because if there is a bag to win, Thom is your man. Miniature caddy Garet Usry won the mini. Who could have known that inside was a certificate for a Hyzernaut DG Starter Pack?? Mini-man took home a Driver, Mid and Putter for his $1 ticket! I was too busy doing the rain dance with ticket cups to see who took home either the laser engraved Truth OR the signed EMAC Handeye x Dynamic Discs Truth. Tito got the Glow EXP-1.

The raffle that seemingly fell into our laps earned over $350! Amazing. Half of that is going to next year's event, and the other half into the course fund.

Homefield advantage saw the Ace throw off come down to Palmer & Smitty vs Bryce & Kelsey with Odd Palmers finally winning the $60.

Team Merged Adams became the first team in DUBS history to successfully defend their title. Knotted with the Bandits after the morning round, the Fusions pulled away in the afternoon by tying for the tournament low score in the Alt Shot sections. Two Ams (and Adams) took home killer trophies and $115 of cold hard cash.

The Spoons also needed the hot 2nd round to claim a 1 stroke victory over the Brown Town Flayers in the 1880 Division. E-Mac climbed off of Denise's shoulders in the afternoon and picked up most of the available course prizes enroute to their 8 down. Her drive and his putt on hole 16 was good for 15 bones and a birdie. $285 plus all the CTP cash wasn't a bad payday (even by traveling pro's standards?). It was the largest payout to date. But what will be remembered is that team "I Turn McCameron" became the first coed pairing to win the event. Well that and E-Mac will sign his discs "1880 Champ" instead of "World Champ" from now on.

All four of our Champions took home trophies I couldn't hope to describe adequately. The Spoons also got a pair of Duck's hoodies to keep them warm as the sun set on our celebrations.

Share some pics and hit me with some feedback. Early thoughts are that I like the optional tees for the 1780 division and that I'm sorry I didn't dedicate a CTP for you guys. Also Hole 12 was a better hole than previous years but wasn't a good choice for the Switch Bonus format.

Loved the sunrise pic! Thanks for posting it! Great tournament as always! Thanks for your hard work! Love the team names. Never stop doing that! What made hole 12 better and why wasn't it good for switch bonus? I have a putt for birdie on that hole almost every time.

Thanks Dave.

12 didn't make a great Sw Bonus hole because it didn't have a good scoring spread and it was the least "aced" hole of the 4 Sw Bonus that we played. Here's a little chart of those four holes with every team's scores on them...
Image
You can see that more than half of the teams parred the hole--so it just played a little too tough. Those numbers sound like a better hole for Switch or Best format.

15 and 24 (the original Sw Bonus holes) are still by far the best holes for that format. They offer a great opportunity to score a 1 but result in a nice spread of scores.

So why is 12 Right (the pin location we played) a better hole than 12 Center (the usual)? 12 Center is like a mitt. It catches everything that doesn't hit an early tree on it's green. Whether you are playing to 12 Left or 12 Right, a decent shot is likely a good shot to 12 Center--often you are closer to 12 Center than either of the other pins. So 12 Right makes you shape a shot a bit where 12 Center just asks you to hit an early gap. It is the 2nd shortest hole on the course, so I'd like it to require some finesse. Also 12 Right brings another small fairway into play. There is a low hyzer or skip shot out to the right. More options makes a better hole.

I've heard a desire for the 1780 teams to play the tournament from the same tees and with the same rules as the 1880 division. Thoughts on this? In the past, I've heard people enjoyed the "tough drive" instead of "tough shot" on the entire hole. I've also heard that the shortened tee pads gave the lower division the chance to score the same as the 1880 division. Is that still the case for some of you? Or did raising the cut off from 1700 to 1780 change things?

Likely making hole 6 a Sw Bonus hole next year as opposed to 12. 6 got birdied a little more than 50% of the time this year which was quite a bit more than 12. One of the 2nd round Alt Shot section will move up one hole and look like this...

1 Best
2 Best
5 Sw Bonus
6 Sw Bonus
7 Alt
8 Alt
9 Alt
10 Best
11 Best
12 Best
13 Best
14 Best
15 Sw Bonus
16 Best
18 Best
19 Best
21 Alt
22 Alt
23 Alt
24 Sw Bonus

Swede - my thoughts on everything - beginning to end! Hope these are worth as many strokes as a few afternoons of putting practice!

1) Loved the event, the format, the day. It is a premier event in the state - the one event I play other tournaments just to be part of. It is because of you, the Hyzernauts, and the camaraderie that this event is SO popular year after year. When can a guy like me - who plays Intermediate - get a chance to be a hole behind a touring pro, a couple holes ahead of a world champ, and in the company of a who's who of KS disc golf. Your skill in TD'ing is strong, and the players who come to this event are some of the most fun folks in Kansas. I was glad to get to play on cards with people I don't often compete with/against, and to do so in a format that is competitive, but as friendly as a DG tournament might get all year!

2) The question about 12... It was a good position - a nice challenge, and tougher to score on than the center or left locations. But, if you're hoping for a way to give people the chance at an "ace", it wasn't friendly to that. 6 is a pretty good choice as a replacement. About the only other choice I can come up with MIGHT be 22, but that's a pretty dicey choice (and would require a major shift in the ALT holes). Another possibility would be to play hole 4, but that would require some walking back - and then another hole would have to get the ax OR it would become a 21 hole tourney. Not sure of the pros/cons there...

3) As far as the 1780-1740-1700 to 1880 jump goes... it was favorable to us in the 17__ division, no doubt, to play up tees and only the tough drive. For us, the tee-pad difference made holes 2, 22, and 13 much easier, but was nearly break-even everywhere else (maybe the long 21 was a big difference as well). The tough shot difference probably was a bigger deal to us, as it probably saved us (perhaps everyone in the division) several strokes (maybe 4/5/6) on holes 7 and 19, in particular. As far as whether EVERYONE should play tough shot OR tough drive... I can't make a recommendation. We'd all live with whatever the decision was - but as I think about a team with say, a junior on it, it could make it EXTREMELY difficult to score remotely well on any of those tough holes. But - maybe that isn't much of a worry. It might add time to make everything tough for both divisions as well - but, so what - we're playing DG! And - with a CTP for the 17__ division - I wouldn't worry about that! Both cards I was on had ample chances to get to the CTP and Long Putt prizes!

4) As I looked at the overall scores, I thought this year was really interesting! Last year, the 1740 teams were all Even or worse. This year: half were under par. Last year's winners of 1880 were 17 under; this year, 12 - but with one heck of a log-jam! Our win this year would have had us around 5th place in the 1880s (granted, different set of rules), while last year, we would have been in the back half/third.

5) Your changes for next year (on the afternoon round) look stunning. 7 will play harder as an ALT hole; 10 should be easier as a BEST. What about the ALT holes carrying all the way through? (End on 9 carries over to start on 21?) That would have possibly affected our strategy! Or ALT on 12, 13, 14? How about moving 1's pin down in the valley to tempt people to go through the new gap over the spillway (might interact with 2 too much)? What about putting 9 way right and making it tough? or putting 9 left and making it a switch bonus? OR both - and switching it between rounds! Or teeing off 18 short into the trees for a switch bonus? Just some crazy my noggin is spitting. I'm sure you've thought of all of those options!

Thanks again, Swede, for making all this goodness happen! Much appreciation to you, my man! Hope this rambling adds value!

That's about as high a compliment as this TD could get. Thanks for the kind words and the input.

When we started with 1700 division, I remember thinking Tough Shot was just too cruel. Even in the 1880 division a lower rated partner in an imbalanced team can get pretty down and frustrated as they advance 40 feet at a time down 7's fairway. Heck, I razzed E Mac about his hole 7 performance. It can be deflating.
arobb wrote:What about the ALT holes carrying all the way through? (End on 9 carries over to start on 21?) That would have possibly affected our strategy!
The ability to reset your order between Alt sections is one of those checks and balances for the High/Low ratings teams. Like in tough shot, things can really snowball during an Alt Shot section. Whether it is in the woods or on the water, there are some holes where there is no place to hide a misfiring arm.

The biggest experiment with this tourney was finding the right percentages of formats and pairing them with the right holes so that the 1000/880 team and the 940/940 team had equal chances of winning (Ditto for 950/830 and 890/890). Based on the last two years results, I think we've got it tuned pretty well. This year there were 11 teams featuring a 960+ rated player, 5 cashed, 6 didn't. 980+ was 4 cashed, 4 didn't.

So I'm reluctant to tinker too much with those percentages or rules that protect the balance we have. However I do think that the opportunity to play formats other than BEST is a draw for the tourney. So I'd love to reduce the number of holes we play BEST on. Trouble is that to some degree every other format hurts a 1000/880 team.

I've heard from half the 1780 teams on format/tees, love to hear from the others. Also I've Some-'Ruh's World. Hard to tell which with 4 Unruhs in attendance.

If you attended this then you know why it filled in 18hrs. By far one of the most fun tournaments of the year! My only suggestion would be if somehow/someway lunch would be provided. Having someone cater or 30pies from pizza hut would do the trick, I would gladly pay another $10 for that option :D Also a large net over the pond to catch all my disc would be beneficial

I suppose we could organize an optional pizza lunch if others are interested. Many of us pack / grill something.

Here's a link to the paper homeboy was snapping pics for. Don't get too excited though, looks like you'd have to subscribe to see the article. But if you scroll over "sports" you can see a pic of this dingus with creeper Whillock supervising. The article seems to claim that I chose disc golf as a way to stay involved after an injury prevented me from playing ball golf. Also Johnny is a world champ. But all publicity is good publicity, right?
