Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Smitty,
Yes indeed, things are looking really nice up there compared to the rough (pretty much abandoned) park that we started out with two years ago. I hope you have a chance to take a peek at it. Unfortunately, I will not be able to play in the Little Apple Open this year because of a nephew's graduation. However, I may be able to make it back to Manhattan in time to see the end of the tournement.
Regarding moving this thread, I understand completely. The reasons I put these Warner posts in here was to try to get a little more recognition for our donors and to promote the course to "out-of-towners"... If the topic wasn't a new course for everyone to play, I would have kept it in the Manhattan part of the forum.
Thanks again for all your hard work Smitty. Hope your recovery is going well.
Rick

Now that our first big work day is over, I would like to give a big thank you to the Youth Impacting Community group that helped us out today. It is a part of the The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.

Fairway #5 is looking pretty good.
#1 Getting worked over with a fine toothed comb. But there will be more later.
#2's brush pile keeps getting bigger & bigger & bigger & ...
That's one stout dude. That log might have weighed more than him!
Lots of activity on top of #2. We pulled a lot out of that fairway!
Quick pic of some of the youth group eating lunch. Maybe I should say refueling.
I just had to take this picture. It's a stack of some putters we used for the lunch break Ring of Fire.
HIGH FIVE! IT WAS HARD WORK, BUT WE STILL HAD FUN. WHAT A DAY!

Here's a few last glimpses of the weeks work at Warner Park.
Here's all the cedar trees we removed from #8 up the hill & thru the trail.
Here's some of the brush we removed from #2.
And the sun sets on a very historic weekend at Warner Park.

Awesome job! The course is great. Can't wait to come out and play it for real (with baskets) soon!
Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Hey Rick!
Good to meet you out on the course yesterday! I'm pretty thrilled about the course! I can't wait to go out again to play with baskets!
By the way, I finished yesterday +1. Not too good when you end up getting two birdies!
Hope to see you out there again real soon!

rlangton,
It was good to see you out here on Saturday. Making the 1+ hour trip to help out on the work day was much appreciated. Sorry I could not finish the back nine at Fairmont, there just wasn't enough time in the day Saturday for everything I wanted to do.
Evan,
Hopefully I didn't throw your game off too much by tagging along for a while. It was pretty cool to be able to watch the discs from your group come out of the trees of #4 and over the hill of #6, despite not being able to see your group. It's the first time I've watched throws from that vantage (not from the tee boxes). I also gotta say it was pretty cool to see you guys tee off #9 while I was setting down on the picnic tables. I love the view from #9, plus the view from down below of people throwing #9!
See Ya,
Rick

Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Is that basket in the picture regulation height? Looks a little short to me.
Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Smitty, you've got a great eye! Yes it is a few inches too low, plus the slope of that area makes it appear even worse.
That basket is the "practice basket" at our course in more ways than one. It is not a basket that's on the course, its in a gathering area for people to practice putting, wait for friends to show up, hang out in the shade between rounds, etc. It's a really cool feature of our course if I do say so myself.
It was also a practice basket for the Parks & Rec. staff to get their installation process perfected. They insisted on doing them in-house. They poured the concrete last Monday, then we stuck the basket in Friday and everyone took a look at it together. Two issues were identified through this "practice" process.
(1) Because they used the irrigation boxes, they mounted the ground sleeve a little too deep into the ground (they didn't account for the lid thickness).
(2) They tried mixing the concrete in the hole, plus they didn't use enough water. Thus this ground sleeve has a little bit of a wobble in it. The problems with the practice basket will be corrected at a later date.
We've thoroughly discussed what steps need to be taken to get them done right. The course baskets will be installed so as to meet the height specifications listed on the Discraft Chainstar assembly guide & the PDGA height specifications.
Thanks again for keeping and eye on things. I appreciate all of the input I've received from you.

Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
WELL, WE HAD A VERY PRODUCTIVE DAY AT WARNER PARK. ALL OF THE BASKETS ARE IN!
Here's the City guys hauling the first basket to it's home at the bottom of fairway #1.
Here's your view of approach at #1.
Here's a close up of #1. Yes it's a weird downhill putt... wait it mean a wicked downhill.
We decided to go ahead and make the first alternate pin swap, yes on day one!
Sorry that I'm not posting more photos, it's been a long day of disc golf work, then of course PLAYING A COUPLE ROUNDS!

Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
I just want to play,
I was out most of the afternoon and saw between 30 and 40 people and the baskets just went in yesterday.
Someone (KT) almost skip aced the 500' hole 9.
When I left, two of the locals had been around 7 times already.

Great photos Mr. Kewley. I really liked the photos with groups of people, especially your first photo. It was surreal to finally see all these groups roaming the Warner Park hillside playing disc golf.
All those hours of preparing PowerPoint presentations, walking that hillside in the cold winter weather, crawling through the thick timber to "find a fairway", fund raising, etc. are starting to pay off!
I only have one question, why no photos of me? (just kidding)

Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
I'll try and check this thing out this weekend. Hopefully be there Sunday.
Re: Warner Park - Manhattan - CONSTRUCTION TOPICS
Here's a few more photos from the weekend.
Which is worth more, the ten baskets for this course or this 1990's two wheel drive city truck?
Baskets, baskets, baskets... they're everywhere.
Hmmmm... Basket #3 seems to be missing something.
Basket #4 still needs a little vegetation clean-up.
Don't dare overshoot #8. You'll regret it!
Blue sky, green grass, shinny basket. What could look better? (Don't answer that)
