Rumor has it #5 could be a stand-still hole after you leave the tee next year. No run-up allowed.

All kinds of stuff going down about it on the PDGA rules thread.

I know in 2003 (I have the video), the tee pad and fairway were parallel with the water, which was on the left. So if you were a lefty, you probably did a hyzer over the water. The bails were in a circle, 12m??? It looks very small.

The year the guy took a 17 (i think), no bunc'r rule, he could not put from the water (i.e. he could not take it where he went o.b. in the water). He walked all the way down there, his disc was in the water, he started to putt, the official stopped him, he walked all the way back. He had to throw from where he layed-up before. I am sure that happened to many, but I just remember a couple years ago watching that. It was the first year they moved the tee up into the trees, so you couldn't do a spike hyzer. And I know there was no Bunc'r rule that year cause they were trying to figure his score on the video (1 out, 2, 3 out, 4, 5 out, etc...).

Schoen-hopper wrote:If that was true, it wouldn't make any sense at all that the scoring average has increased. Anyone know? Before the Bunc'r rule, did they use to require you to throw from a drop zone if you went in the water? Or was it actually a re-tee?

If it is true that you have always had to retee, that means the Bunc'r rule is causing people to attack the pin and pay a price. If it is OB with a mandatory re-tee, it would be crazy to try to get close to that pin.

I believe they have moved the bails a little over the years? Tougher each year?
Actually, the bales now have a much larger "safe" area. The old landing zone was much smaller and didn't have the extended kidney shape. In other words, you pretty much had to land a good shot or suffer the consequences. On my last trip you got 2 attempts to land the shot, then you advanced to the drop zone for a 35' putt. You were standing on the edge of in bounds. This was done to speed up play. Prior to this you made the shot, or continued to bleed until you were out of discs and could not go on! Some extremely large #s have been produced this way. Even great players had a good round trashed by 17.

Now that sounds retarded. 5 is a huge hole. Doesn't seem right though, no matter how long the hole was.

That was just a rumor. Harold said he had no plans to implement stand-and-deliver on any hole.

The biggest rule change he pushed for would be a 1.5M circle around the basket. Any disc that lands inside the circle under the basket...the lie would be marked on the edge of that circle, and the player would putt in for no penalty. He was trying to eliminate the "drop in" from parking a drive/upshot.

It's all on the PDGA rules forum.

The rules at the USDGC are stupid! Buncr rule is the dumbist thing I've ever heard of, and the whole 1.5 meter thing IS pointless and LAME! can we just play golf???

(This might answer a few questions. It did for me. So, on 17, you never got to come in a meter if you went in the water. The info below doesn't line up that well, but it's easy to figure out, I think.)

Dear Don,

Thanks for writing and the kind words about the coverage. Hole 17 has had a number of variations over the years, but the OB options have never included 1-meter in from where the disc last left fair territory. In my opinion, this option would lessen the test and place a high burden on the spotter. In cases you are interested, I have included below the various ways that we have played 17 over the years.

Thanks again and take care,
Harold Duvall

Hole 17 Changes ofer the years

Tee Distance Green Shape Drop Zone Ground Rule

Lakeside 228 Semi circle None OB (Penalty Stroke and Distance), no limit, no drop zone
Lakeside 228 Semi circle Added drop zone after 1st year, Not sure when OB Penalty then drop zone but not sure how many throws
Lakeside 228 Semi circle
Lakeside 228 Semi circle
Lakeside 228 Semi circle
Streetside 249 Wide but shallow In front of tee - 150 foot from pin OB (Penalty Stroke and Distance) Go to drop zone after 2 misses, no limit from Drop zone
Streetside 249 Wide but shallow In front of tee - 150 foot from pin OB (Penalty Stroke and Distance) Go to drop zone after 1 miss, no limit from Drop zone
Streetside 249 Wide but shallow Drop spot inside green - 60 foot OB (Penalty stroke and Distance) Go to Drop Spot after 2 misses
Streetside 249 Florida None, but bailout tongue in front of tee OB (Penalty stroke and Distance) no zone, no limit
Streetside 249 Florida, expanded None, but bailout tongue in front of tee Buncr (Distance), no drop zone, no limit

Me and Harold go way back!

Actually, it was on the "Contact Us" type link off the USDGC site. I didn't really know who would answer, if anyone, but I should have figured. :)
