Skins

Post by Schoen-hopper »

I think it would be fun to put on a skins event sometime on a weekend, likely a Saturday afternoon. We could set up a 10 or 12 hole course with some crazy par 4 holes. HH would be better suited for this.

We'd run it similar to how we used to do KDGA finals. If less than a third of the field tie for the best score on a given hole, they split the accumulated money. If not, it pushes. So much money for best overall score. Might throw something else in too, like for most pushes.

We would do something like $15 or $20 a person. With this format, each player usually gets something back. We'd need 5 to 12 people. If we had more, we could have 2 divisions.

If there is some interest, I will try to throw something like this together one of these Saturdays after I get off work, probably somewhere around 2:30-3:00pm.

How does next Sat. at 3pm sound? Who is in for that?

I have a 14 hole course in mind. Should we do $1 skins or $.50?. We could have a small side pot for best score, most pushes, longest putt.

I'm in. :D
This course you have in mind, is it all monster holes or are some reachable from the tee, and should there be a mandatory 51 for the group? Just an Idea.

This is also an experiment with hole design. I want to keep it simple, so some of the holes are regular holes and most of them use tee pads. I'll throw what I have out there and see if there are any thoughts. As far as my estimations on scores, it will all depend on how many show up and who.

If we do $.50 skins with $2 overall score, $1 most skins pushed, and $1 longest putt, that would be $11. Likely, most players would only win or lose about half of that. I'd be up for making it $1 skins with $3 overall, $1 longest putt, $1 most skins pushed, & an extra dollar for a CTP. That would be $20. If there are several people who would prefer less dough, lets go for that.

If we have more than 5 for 2 different divisions, we could split them. Since it is skins and anyone with a good hole can win money, it shouldn't be a big deal if everyone playing isn't exactly the same skill level.

Hole 1: Normal Hole 2 from long tee.
Par 3. A 2 might win skin outright.

Hole 2: Hole 3's short tee to 4. Both mando’s in play.
Par 4.5. A 4 might split some skins.

Hole 3:
Option 1: 30' longer back from 5's long tee to 5. 1st mando in play.
This is my favorite because the trees are really in play on the drive.
Par 3.5. A 3 might split some skins.

Option 2: 5's short pad to 7.
There is a drive on the other side of the street where there is no curve. A low shot or roller might be able to get across here, but it would take a perfect shot or some luck.
Par 3. A 3 will most likely be a push.

Hole 4: Hole 6 from the short pad.
Par 3. A 3 will most likely be a push.

Hole 5:
Option 1: Hole 7 long tee.
Par 3.5. A 3 might split some skins.

Option 2: On the side of the hill just down from 6's short pad, about 330' from the park road, we could tee off to hole 5's basket, just across the road. Low ceiling drive or wide hyzer is safer but longer.
Par 3.5. A 3 might split some skins.

Hole 6: Hole 14 short tee to 15.
Par 3.5. A 3 might split some skins.

Hole 7: 15’s fairway tee about 300’ back to 14’s basket.
Par 3: A 2 might split some skins.

Hole 8: Hole 13 from the short tee.
Par 3. A 2 might win skins outright.

Hole 9: to basket 8.
Option 1: A long shot down the road. Across the road would be safe. Dual routes with 13’s fairway being a longer, safer route.
Par 3.5. 3 might split some skins.

Option 2: A long shot with a low or roller option through the pines or a 2 shot hyzer over the road. This one could be moved shorter yet or on the hill for a 2-able hole.
Par 3.5. 3 might split some skins.

Hole 10: 5’s long tee to 3. This is a cool hole. Would it be better with 9’s basket as that one could yield a 2?
Par 3.5. 3 might split some skins.

Hole 11: Water center tee around the columns to 11’s basket.
Par 4. 3 could win skins outright.

Hole 12: to 16.
Option 1: 12’s short tee. Long downhill shot towards the river.
Par 3.5. 3 might push skins.

Option 2: Tee from the 2nd sidewalk on 12’s fairway.
Both options are cool looking shots, but just a little too far to get a decent shot at a 2.
Par 3.5 3 might push skins.

Option 3: Tee from the road. Shorter and trees aren’t nearly as much in play.
Par 3. 2 could win skins.

Hole 13: 17 from long tee.
Par 3.5. 3 might push skins.

Hole 14: 18’s short tee to 1. Road OB.
3 would clean up all the skins. Any pushing skins would be won by those who tied for the best score?

I think I'd be in favor of playing the shorter versions to the optional holes. Maybe we could use a shorter tee to basket 5 the 2nd time to make it 2 able. I wanted to get some fun holes with the OB road in play (last hole will be a good one). Perhaps we could play the hole to 8's basket both ways instead of 14-15?

Looks like the best score would likely be...

1) 2
2) 4
3) 3
4) 3
5) 3, 2 possible
6) 3
7) 2
8 ) 2
9) 3, 2 possible
10) 3, 2 possible
11) 3
12) 2
13) 3
14) 3

So a tougher course, but not neccesarily because of length. My idea was to focus on rewarding good 2nd shots for many of these par 3.5's.

Randy helped me put the finishing touches on the skins course today. Very fun skins course! 2's possible on 6 holes. It is now marked, so you can play it tomorrow if you like.

If we do $12 entry, here is how I'd like to do the payout. I'm bringing plenty of change to make payout easier.

$7 (per player) in skins money for 14 holes.
$.50 for a bonus skin on the last hole.
$1.50 for overall score winner.
$.50 for overall score 2nd place.
$.50 for player with most hole pushes.
$1 for longest shot made on any hole. It has to be within 2 strokes of the best score for the hole to count.
$1 CTP on hole 7, the shortest hole.

Here is the short version of the course. All course OB and and Mando's are in play. Exception is holes 5 and 6, where both sides of the park road are safe, though the road is not.

Hole 1) Normal hole 2 long tee. Par 3.
Hole 2) 3's short tee to 4's basket. Par 4.5
Hole 3) 30' back from 5's long tee to 5's basket. Par 3.5
Hole 4) Normal hole 6 short tee. Par 3.5
Hole 5) By the culvert (downhill from 6's short tee) to 5's basket. Par 3
Hole 6) From under trees near the road on 5's fairway to 8's basket. Par 3.5
Hole 7) From 15's fairway to 14's basket. Par 3
Hole 8 ) Normal hole 13 short tee. Par 3.
Hole 9) From Hill near 5's short tee to 8's basket. Par 3.
Hole 10) From 5's long tee to 3's basket. Par 3.5.
Hole 11) Large teeing area in water center to 11's basket. Par 3.5
Hole 12) From hole 12's sidewalk on far side of creek near road to 16's basket. Par 3
Hole 13) Normal hole 17 long tee. Par 3.
Hole 14) 18's short tee to 1's basket. Par 4.

Course Par = 14x3+5= 47
