Fort Morgan Winter Warriors
Posted at 8:04 am by JayB

They drove up from the brown, and into the green,
Where Ponto and Rob shot a minus 13
Forty four souls, braved the cold and the chill,
And the very next day, they spoke of it still.
But that was then, and we’re over that,
Now next in line, is the course by the Platte.
Winter Warriors this time, takes us due East.
And again the cause is, to create such a feast.
No it’s not for us, so don’t stand there and pout,
But it’s for those who know nothing, than going without.
It’s out in the plains, so you might see a horse,
But there’s something special about the Optimist course
That’s makes people want to carpool and drive
To a place that just make you feel so alive.
They are long shots and short shots and a sidearm or two,
Just don’t make me play worst shot, if you do, then I’m through.
There are laughs and smiles all through the round,
Can’t think of a better reason, to blow out of town.
Fort Morgan it is, and it’s one of the best,
And I think it will prove, to be quite a test.
Most people will tell you, just so you know,
It’s one of our favorites, and that’s why we’ll go!

Beaver Ranch Winter Warriors
Posted at 1:57 pm by JayB

Bring on the snow, bring on the chill,
It won’t stop the Cpt, from trudging up the hill.
There might be some whiners; there might be some wimps,
But when you play Winter Warriors, it’s nothing but champs.
It’s for a good cause, money spent well,
For people who need help, let’s answer the bell.
5 bucks isn’t much, to you or to me,
But it seems heaven sent when you’re cold and hungry.
So tomorrow the place, they call Beaver Ranch
Will welcome us all, for a mountain side dance.
It’s easy to be there, when it’s held close by,
But might take a bit more, for the course in the sky
If you have never played, this course up the hill,
Put your fear of cold aside and I promise you will.
Have the time of your life, among Warriors and friends,
Where the means surely does, justify the ends.
I’ll be there tomorrow; my cheeks will be red,
My feet will be cold and one freezing bald head.
But for the fun I will have, it’s a small price to pay,
Knowing the money I spent just made someone’s day.
So I’ll throw through the trees, and hope my discs don’t splinter,
With a grin on my face as a Warrior of Winter.

Winter Warrior Doubles Series 08-09
Posted at 2:07 pm by Toad

It’s that time of year again….4th annual Winter Warriors!!!

This is a weekly series starting November 8. Weekly voluntary donation is $5 per person. ALL PROCEEDS NOT SPENT ON PRIZES WILL BE DONATED TO THE 2008 ICE BOWL FUND!!! The Ice Bowl supports Food Bank of the Rockies, Arvada Food Bank and Jeffco Open Space. Let’s make this year’s donation our biggest ever! Year 1 generated over $2500. Year 2 generated over $2800! Year 3 generated over $3300!

Format will be random draw doubles, best shot with a small twist….double birdies!

Double birdies – Both players drive and select the best shot. If both players make birdie from that spot they score a -2 for that hole.

Just to keep everyone guessing, the tournament hosts will modify several holes prior to start time! Watch out for alternate shot, worst shot, putter only holes, disc swaps and more! This is going to be fun!!!

Weekly winners will each receive a Winter Warrior bag tag with the series logo, date and location. Series winners (probably top 10) will receive additional prizes. Series winners will be determined by totaling the players’ top 6 weekly scores. Weekly participation is not required.

Scheduled locations are below:

  • November 8 – Johnny Roberts – 9:00 am
  • November 15 – Beaver Ranch – 9:00 am
  • November 22 – Fort Morgan – 10:00 am
  • November 29 – Expo – 9:00 am
  • December 6 – Bird’s Nest – 5:00 pm
  • December 13 – Fort Collins – 10:00 am
  • December 20 – School of Mines – 9:00 am
  • December 27 – Badlands – 9:00 am
  • January 3 – Schaefer – 9:00 am
  • January 10 – Widefield – 10:00 am
  • January 17 – Longmont – 10:00 am
  • January 24 – Red Rocks Community College – 9:00 am
  • January 31 – Bird’s Nest – 9:00 am

There will be a weekly ace pool. Ace pool winners will receive 50% of the pool. The remaining 50% will be donated to the Ice Bowl fund. Dollars will carry over from week to week. CTP throws for donated prizes are $1 per throw immediately following each round. Please let us know if you have something to donate…discs, game tickets, ski passes, etc. It is for a great cause!

Thanks for your support!

2nd Annual OPXE
Posted at 12:00 am by The Chad

opxe2
It’s that time of year again! Come on down to Expo for a fun-filled disc golf event, just in time for Halloween! $25 entry gets you a sweet disc and a patch, payouts will be in gift certificates to Dog Leg Discs.

Costumes are MANDATORY (else a 4-stroke penalty)! This will also be a ONE-DISC CHALLENGE using your player’s package disc. Players will traverse the course backwards proceeding from their starting tee going for the basket of the previously numbered hole: (tee 18 to 17’s basket, 17’s tee to 16’s basket etc.. all the way around… tee 1 will play to the practice basket) it’s makes for a ton of ace runs and a lot of weird shots.

I will be making liberal use of mandos to keep things interesting. Don’t worry bananas, no mandos for you! Absolutely no O.B., unless it’s in the water
heckling is encouraged, whining is not..

This is sure to be another great time, just ask anyone that played last year!

MHDGC Elections ‘08
Posted at 4:50 pm by marshief

Election season is in full swing, and we at MHDG are getting into the fun.  This club would not exist if not for the all the volunteer effort that goes into running it. The more people to share in this effort, the easier it is for those who (gladly) carry this burden. Elections are coming at the end of October, so now is the time to nominate someone to be a board member of Mile High Disc Golf Club.

Being a board member requires a commitment to regularly attend meetings (approximately monthly). If you cannot make such a commitment but still want to help the club, there are many ways to volunteer. We need people to help run tournaments, seek sponsorships, and do course development and maintenance. Talk to any of the club leaders if you are interested in making occasional contributions.

There are four open board positions up for grabs this year:
- three 3-year terms
- one 2-year term

Nomination forms are available online (dirnomform).  All nominees for board positions must be current members of the club in good standing, and must have been a member for at least one year.  Nominations must be signed by five current members of the club, and received by the board by October 20.  Nomination forms may be submitted to any current board member (John Bird, Tom Hamilton, Jeff Panis, Ken Hughes, Marshall Buhl, Max Maclay, Dan Gargan, Scott Hoffman, Marsha Sonderfan) or mailed to:

Mile High Disc Golf Club
PO BOX 701
Arvada, CO 80001
Nominations must be accepted by the nominee.  The board will contact all nominees prior to opening online voting.  The board may also nominate people for positions.  Thus far, John Bird has been nominated by the board to retain his position.

Elections will be held online, with voting open from October 27 to 31.  Information will be emailed to all current Mile High members for whom we have a valid email address.  For those who have not voted by close Oct 31, paper ballots will be available at the OPXE on November 1.  An official members meeting will take place following the OPXE, and election results will be announced at the annual members meeting.   More details to come about the members’ meeting.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like more information, please contact Marsha Sonderfan through the forums (marshief).

Conifer Classic Update
Posted at 7:15 am by Toad

There has been some confusion over the payment options for Confier Classic because this is the first event which the club has offered online registration exclusively–there is no mail in option. This decision was made after looking back at previous event registration lists and concluding there was a decreasing number of players mailing payments and the online option allows tournament directors to better prepare for event day. The club is discussing options, like using merchant services to handle all purchases on the Mile High website, or better integrating with PayPal to help eliminate confusion. We’ll keep everyone up to date. Until then, please leave a comment to this post if you’d like to share your thoughts on this decision.

Meanwhile, for the Confier Classic, be prepared to pay online if you wish to secure a spot. You do not have to be a member of PayPal to complete the purchase, you simply need a credit card.

Conifer Classic update:
Friday: Player Check in 4-6 PM, Random Draw Doubles (optional), 4:30 PM
Saturday: Check-in 7:00AM, 8:15 AM Players Meeting, first round 8:45 AM Shotgun Start, lunch break, second round 1:30 PM (estimate) Shotgun Start, 2 rounds of 20 holes, Awards with buffet dinner included with registration!! Made to Order lunch offered at registration.

Tent & Cabin Camping available Friday and Saturday nights.
Contact http://beaverranch.org/ or Katrina Zechman at 303.838.3705 for reservations.

Here’s an update from tournament director David ‘Ponto’ Poniatowski:

Everything is coming together nicely for the 2nd Annual Conifer Fall Classic. Paid registration has spiked the past several days. Make sure to get registered before the event fills. The tentative registration cut off is currently set for Thursday, Oct. 2. REMEMBER, THIS IS AN ONLINE REGISTER AND PAY EVENT ONLY!! Any issues, talk to Ponto or your favorite Mile High board member.

We’ve got a great Am players pack which includes a Discraft hotstamped disc with the Beaver logo, a high-quality, multi-color long sleeve tee, Chili’s cash coupons and much more!! Am packs go to the first 60 paid registrants so make sure to sign up soon to ensure you’re in.

Zoka’s Restaurant will be serving up lasagna for the awards dinner. Your registration includes this dinner. For those 21 and older, Zoka’s will also be providing a keg of a delicious microbrew. Rumor has it, it could be another great Avery pour.

We will be doing a mass work weekend to prepare for the tournament. That is set for this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 & 28. We will be removing slash from fairways, working on tee pads, and installing benches for our sponsored holes. If you aren’t heading to Am States and can help out, it’s greatly appreciated. TAKE PRIDE IN THE GAME AND GIVE BACK!! Please contact Ponto for additional info.

THE COLORS ARE GOING TO BE KICKING NEXT WEEKEND!! Aspens will be in full bloom. Even if you don’t plan on playing, you should head up and enjoy the splendor (I love that word, splendor).

Bailey Workshop Update: (from David Poniatowski) Foothill Flyers Disc Golf Club presents a workshop on disc golf fundamentals in Bailey, CO. This is a unique opportunity to learn from top pro’s including Peter Shive and hopefully Mike Randolph on putting, approach, and big drives. Additionally, the temporary course at Bailey will be available for play. I’d love to see as many Mile High guys coming out to help with the area youth (this is really being pushed at the local schools) to positively influence those that are introduced to the game and to have a chance to play another sweet course in the mountains. All ages and skill levels welcome. Costs are low and if you help out, we can waive your entry fee. We may do a cash-only game if we have enough quality players that show up. For additional details, go to www.coloradodisc.com.
Rudy and Ponto.

Only 6 days left before Conifer Classic — Register Now!

Email David Poniatowski, tournament director, with any questions.
