Proposed Club/Team Challenge

Post by carlbren21 »

I have been tossing around an idea for the last week or so with some players around town about having a team format event for clubs and/or cities or states compete against each other. We could do it one of several different ways....

1. We could host a normal tournament with everyone still competing for cash/prizes as individuals. However, we could have a side deal where we have several teams/clubs of 5-10 players competing agains each other in like divisions. (ie. each team would have 2 open, 2 adv, 2 masters, 2 am, and 2 women). I thought it would be cool to do traveling bag tags or something along these lines for the winning team. Of course, each club would have to come up with their own qualifying system to come up with their team, but that shouldn't be too hard.

2. We could host a completely separate event/s where only the teams would be competing against each other kind of like the Ryder and Presidents Cup in ball Golf. We could rotate courses/cities similar to the ryder cup as well.

I have had a lot more ideas than this and could go on for awhile but will leave this open for discussion. What do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in this? Not that there isn't already a lot of competition in the t-ments but this would really get people going. Any ideas/suggestions/criticism?

That is so interesting that you brought that up just now because in the last week or so, I came up with the same idea. I hadn't told anyone my idea yet because I hadn't come up with a definite plan yet. What a great idea.

I was thinking more of a fantasy disc golf, yearly thing where we would get paired up in teams of four. Open, Masters, Advanced and Am. Then it woud be based on points throughout the year. So you would want people on your team that would make a lot of tournaments.

I was thinking of taking last years points and then just making up even teams based on what people did last year. That way you couldn't "stack" the teams. Just a preliminary idea to consider.

That sounds great as well. The only thing I can see that might become an issue with that, is that the game is growing so fast, and peoples skill levels change a lot from year to year, it might be tough to choose fair teams. I will say this about fantasy DG.... I would play!!! We could do it with the pros in NT events or something. I don't know, very cool though. One questions though.... who chooses first and second (Ken, Barry!)???

If we did this by clubs and/or cities, each team could be different from week to week based upon who plans on attending. Mainly, I was thinking of having a series type competition where we could have like 4-5 throughout the year at different tournaments (so home course would even out). At the end of the year, add up the points and you have the winner. Not 100% on how to do points... could do it like golf where they take the top score from each team in each division, each round and add them up like that. There's plenty of ways to do it, that would be good. [/quote]

Our League also talked about this at our monthly meeting.

I always thought a two day multiple format team tournament would be a cool idea.

Teams of six. Two open players, two masters, and two skill restricted players. Four rounds, each with a different format.

1. Singles
2. Doubles (best disc)
3. Two (three?) 9 hole match play matches (random draw determines opponents).
4. A format where your score for each hole (or set of holes to simplify things) is based on your stroke score in relation to what the the rest of the field did. 2 points for each player you beat, 1 point for ties. High score wins.

Each event and each division would be scored independently and points would be awarded by ordinal. 2 points for each team you beat, 1 for ties. So if for example you say had ten teams, each team having nine opponents, and in a specific event your:

Open team finishes 1st = 18 points (nine teams beaten, 9x2)
Masters team finishes 3rd = 14 points (seven teams beaten, 7x2)
Amateur team finishes in a two-way tie for 4th = 11 points (five teams beaten, 5x2; one team tied, 1x1).

...your team would get 43 points for that event.

Team scores for all four events would be added together. High team score wins.

We've thrown that idea around here many times. We don't have any women that golf more than just on occasion.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

We did a team event in Abilene one year. Smitty could probably tell you what we did. It was a singles tournament, but for a $5 per person sidebet: Salina, Wichita, and Emporia (other teams played?) got together something like 2 masters, 2 open players, and 2 advanced player and awarded points for the order of finish in each division. Emporia ended up winning rights to the KDGA final location for 2006.

Bill Paulson has long wanted to host a team format event at Newton. I'm not sure what exactly he was going for, but he mentioned match play. 24 holes could be divided 3 ways for either 8 holes matches or an 8-8-8 format of some sort.

What ever you do with the team format, it has got to generate some interest. If you don't have the teams, you don't have the event. You might also find a way to make some flexibility on the number of players per team. A team could consist of 2 OR 3 open players, 2 OR 3 masters, and 2 OR 3 advanced players and so forth. Make the advantage a slight one for those teams with more players to encourage more to play but not discourage those teams who aren't stacked.

How is the Ryder Cup played? That has got to be the best team event of all time. You got to think about how many teams will be playing, though. Certainly not just two.
