It appears that there may be multiple people interested in attending the USDGC this year who don't feel they'll be able to qualify during tournament play. I've noticed that each area of the state has different ideas about how the state representative should be selected. Here are my thoughts on why a single tournament is not the best method to select the state rep:
1. Not everyone may be able to attend that particular tournament
2. Players in different divisions may not play the same course
3. Players in different divisions may not play under the same conditions, i.e. wind, rain, heat, etc.
Advantages to head-to-head competition for the USDCG spot:
1. You are all competing for the same prize
2. Groups are the players you are competing against
3. Can be scheduled so everyone can participate
Better yet:
Use the PDGA Player Ratings
1. Cumulative over a period of time - not who had a good day today
2. Demonstrates ability to play different courses
3. Demonstrates ability to play in competition situation
4. Player has made effort to attend tournaments
5. Provides the cleanest evaluation of player skill we have available at this time
6. Ratings will be updated in July, just before USDGC entry fee is due
7. Non-judgemental, non-partisan, non-favoritism
Any thoughts?

Everyone that has posted on this thread plays in the open division.
I believe that most folks would be more interested in making the trip to emporia <mostly a central location in the state> to play a great tournament and have a shot at qualifing as opposed to driving halfway across Kansas to play a head to head match just for a spot at the usdgc.
I think the player rating idea is not a very good one. My rating for example is based on the few sanctioned events that are in this area. I think that this would also penalize players that are new members to the PDGA but have the ability to play at a high level.
If you want a fair decision then I propose it is either a qualifying event or a lottery.

Last year, Dennis and I were the only people who showed interest in being the state rep for the USDGC (that Terri knew of).
She thought we should have a playoff to determine who should go, but in my respect and friendship with Dennis, I just said that I would be happy to let him go that year (2004), if I could be promised the spot in 2005.
Dennis only wanted to go to the USDGC one year, so we all 3 thought it was a great idea and agreed on it.
However, it is obvious there is a substantial amount of interest this year, and so..... I just PM'd Terri that I am backing out of the "promised" spot for 2005 in order that everyone can have a shot to go this year. Whatever we all decide is a good way to choose a rep is cool with me.
