Great Bend

Post by smitty »

Mace and I went to GB last summer and helped them layout a course. Looks like the trip paid off! Thanks to the hard work of Nick Gregory, GB is going to be home to a new 18 hole course. The parks department has 18 Mach V's and will be installing them when the have time.

If they are in before the June 4th tourney. That is where we will play!

The course has bombs, dinkers, hyzers, anhyzers, OB roads, water, Open shots, Tech shots.

Lets hope the Parks Dept. finds some time!!

The baskets are in the ground. The tees are not finished as of yet. Some of you western Kansas people get over there and check it out.

I plan on playing this puppy while I am in Western Kansas this weekend. I will probably play it on the way home Sunday afternoon, if it isn't 105 out.

Played it on the way home today. If you live an hour away and have not played it yet, you are missing out.

Use the Pink flags for the tees. Play the walking path as OB. After hole 12, you have to walk down the road about 200 yards to the next tee and you are good.

Mace I think that we did a hell of a job laying this puppy out. Most of the holes are just like we layed them out. A few seem to be a little different, but still pretty damn good.

Bowlby, help the man out.

Nick-

If you would send me a copy of the map via my e-mail, I will see what I can get figured out.

The course is great! Thanks for all of your hard work.

Here is the Great Bend map.

It is a pretty good walk from hole 12 to 13. Then on hole 14 there is a tee box that plays over the water also. Hole 15 is missing the flags for the tee, I played from the corner of the shelter, how far off was I Nick?

Hole 10 is Bad A$$! It could be a little longer and even be better.
Hole 18 is the best chance to throw one in the drink. It looks longer then it plays.

Made a trip saturday to GB to play the new 18 hole course at Veterans Memorial Park. This course is absolutely gorgeous. Great Park, very SWEET design. Only complaint would be the little pink flags were smashed to the ground, so finding the teepads was a challenge. Good job and great efforts to all that had a part in this one!!!

Leo-

They have plans for tees in the next few weeks. Mace played the other day, and he thought maybe a few of the pads could be moved a little for better flow and to make the course more safe.

My biggest concern with the design was the walk to hole 13 (pretty long), the hole is well worth it and will get better with time. The other concern I had was with the hole that played down the sand trail.

We did what we could with the land, to layout the best 18 holes we could. Nick works for the city, and did all of the leg work for the course!

Did you play the sidewalks as OB? It takes the course to the next level.

Yes played sidewalks ob and all roads ob. There was about a 20-25 mile an hour wind, and still shot a -6 with a bog.
Yes the walk to 13 is a MF'r, but once your done with 12, there isn't a whole lot you can do, although a hole on that little stretch of land would be one tough SOB!!!
Looking on the map, I thought the water would come into play alot more than it did. Hole 10 is the only one that really gives you a water scare, I think hole 14 gave me a Lake Shawnee feel to it.
Also, I am not sure if I tee'd off at the right place on hole 15, there was two pink flags that were just kinda laying on the ground, about 50 feet from each other, so I played both

Hole 10 would be kick butt if it was about 200 feet longer.

18 could bring the water into play I would think.

Not a bad course I'd give it a 6 to a 6.5 out of 10. Kinda Reminds me of prarie center.......in ten years when the trees get big it would be a lot better. Nailed the unit on ten that was pretty sweet snatched a buck from T. Rude for my efforts. All in all its a birdie fest. More water shots should have been worked in especially 14. Hole 15 and 16 are the most you can look forward too out of the 18. No tees tho I would not try to play this puppy as of now unless you get a map even then its was still tough. Some dude said they should have some tees in a few months.

Kevin and I got the chance to play Great Bend today and we both really enjoyed it. The wind blows pretty strong off of the water. :) I especially enjoyed #15 and #16. It just goes to show you that a hole doesn't have to be a long bomber to be fun to play. After we were done playing a couple of rds there we played the short nine at Hoisington (spelling?) and things went down hill quickly. To make a long story short, it involved his car seizing up and a $600 dollar tow to get it back to Concordia :( .
