I like the way Yahoo does "possible points".
In my office pool I've been doing through my dad at Spirit for years, I calculate the possible points compared to the actual points to statistically eliminate contender (but I don't mention this part).
One thing we've said we should do every year, but I always forget about it, is change the point system.
The way it is, you get twice as many points for every round as the one previous. While this is okay, the person who picks the champion always wins, regardless of how they picked the other 62 games. I can see how this would be good in a contest of several thousand players, but in a group of 10-40?
How I would propose a point system would be to reward people for correctly picking upsets. And the other big difference would be that points are increased per round gradually, but not doubling each round. Rather, you would go about 1.5x each round. And each round, you get the difference between the lowest possible seed and the correctly picked underdog.
Instead of rounds 1,2,3,4,5,& 6 being worth 1 point, 2 points, 4, 8, 16, and 32.....
1st round would be worth 4. 2nd 6. 3rd 9. 4th 14. 5th 20. 6th 30.
On top of that, you would get bonuses for correctly picking upsets. Say KS St. beats USC the first round. For that game you would get 4 pts. + (11-6) = 9 pts. Say you pick KS St. to go to the Final Four and they do. For that game (4th round) you would get 14 pts. + (11-1) = 24 pts. The 11 seed minus 1 this time because 1 was the lowest possible seed for this game.
Sounds hard, but I think it would actually be more fun. It's too hard to commit to upsets otherwise.
