In golf, a circle means a birdie and slashes are used for penalty strokes. Doesn't matter though.

Birdies are circled, bogies have a square, but I've never seen anything with slashes. If you put a slash to the right of a 5 on a golf scorecard and turned it in, they would count the slash as a one and the score for the hole would be 51! The whole reason I brought it up is because my old golf coach would ask us what we shot when we came in. Someone would say, 'well I shot a 78, but had four penalty strokes'. He would quickly reply, '78 is 78, doesn't matter how many penalty strokes you had... you don't draw pictures on the scorecard... you draw numbers'. It was always on of my fav quotes!
