1880 Doubles Oct 29th
Re: 1880 Doubles Oct 29th
We are skipping 3, 4, 17, and 20. The only safari hole will be to 21--the par 4 we played in the finals of Teams.
Throw Millennium.

I don't have any league info on John Gmache(sp?), but I would guess him around 910 perhaps.b dale wrote: If anybody can help with player ratings on the two Johns, that would be great. John Gmache(sp?) and John Cunningham (hasn't played for quite a while)
John Cunningham was about 970 PDGA rated before he quit.

Thanks Bro! Now I can start my mental assault on the course. Is the safari hole the last hole on the island? Then we played over the pond to the dam. I am assuming you walk around the pond to 1?

This will be won by someone at some point

The hole to 21 is the hole to the back corner with the tree line up the middle and the field to the left.smitty wrote:b dale wrote:We are skipping 3, 4, 17, and 20. The only safari hole will be to 21--the par 4 we played in the finals of Teams.

Hey Smitty and gang, long time no see/talk!
I'm planning on playing the Newton doubles this weekend with Shane as my partner. He told me about it, and it sounded like a really fun format, and I keep saying I'm gonna "get back into Disc Golf", but just havent for whatever reason. Anyway, I basically haven't touched a disc in 7 years, so I didnt think anyone would have any issues with me and Shane playing together. I believe he is 950, and I'm sure I won't be playing at that level... 7 years is a long time to build up rust! So my guess is we will be at or below the required 1880... just making sure everyone is cool with it :0)
Anyway, I am pumped to play this Saturday, and can't wait to see some old faces! Hopefully I dont embarrass myself too much!!

Nope. Sorry to let you down. 21 we played from flags, righty hyzer drive, lefty hyzer approach with the roped O.B. bean field left of the pin. You said "this would be a Smitty hole. I'd play this every time." No puddle jumping except for regular 22 and 23.smitty wrote:Thanks Bro! Now I can start my mental assault on the course. Is the safari hole the last hole on the island? Sweet, I love that hole. Hope that is during the best shot format.
Re: 1880 Doubles Oct 29th
I wrote that almost 2 months ago and today the axe finally dropped. I made the call that Shane (949) and John Cunningham (former 970ish PDGA rating) would have an unfair advantage playing together. There is no way to accurately estimate how time off effects your play but I felt with some practice it is unlikely that someone would play more than 40 points worse than their last rating. Perhaps this is a harsh way of looking at it. But the premise behind the K-Ratings and 1880 Dubs is to level the playing field. And I am not willing to risk giving one team an advantage especially when the numbers warn against it. I wish I had at least one tournament result to help make the call.b dale wrote:Again, once the Frontier Open is entered, anyone with 7 rounds in their K-Rating will be "locked in" for 1880 Dubs. Those with less can lobby for leniency. Fair warning though, the Judge is a heartless prig who has lost all joy.
I've apologized to Shane and John and I hope the DG community will encourage John to not let this unfortunate situation keep him from getting back out to the course.
Throw Millennium.

Have you hugged a Dynamic Discs member today? Prez and CEO Dr. Rusco doled out the disc golf medicare to make sure we've got plastic for the Rec Division and payout for main event. Some of his growing number of his employees are busy hand crafting artisan discs for our visual pleasure this Saturday. So if you dig disc golf, thank the DD crew next time you see them for their continued and generous support of our sport.

Re: 1880 Doubles Oct 29th
I think that as hard as it may have been, it is probably the correct call. If Shane has a current rating of 950 that would mean Jon would need to be rated 930 or lower. If he went out and put in a couple practice rounds he would easily surpass that rating. In fact, I think that he would easily play 950 rated or better.b dale wrote:

I threw one of the other two I have and it would be a great thrower roc, stiff and stable with great glide, flies as far as my non champ rocs which I haven't had happen with previous runs

Re: 1880 Doubles Oct 29th
Hey guys,
Just wanted to say, I think it's a huge mistake not to let Shane and I play in this tourney. I completely disagree with you Smitty.. you would be amazed how much of a difference 7 years off can make. I played Newton yesterday (first time ive played in years, and only time I will be playing until Saturday), and it was a mess. My putting was off, my distance was nothing like it used to be, and I was spraying drives everywhere in those trees. My bag is filled with Orcs and Firebirds... I'm not throwing a single "new" fast disc with speeds of 12, etc. So even my equipment being out of date will hinder my performance. There is no way I am capable of consistantly playing 930 as of now. Obviously with a few months of practice, I totally agree I could play well above that, but now I'm extremely rusty... disc golf isn't like "riding a bike".
Also, I think not allowing us to play goes entirely against the premise that the KDGA was built for.. to promote play and socialization among disc golfers and friends in the Kansas area. This tournament sparked an interest in me to "get back into the game" and the KDGA. The KDGA has NEVER been about hardcore competition, especially at an event of this nature. Obviously disc golf is a very competitive sport, but that's typically reserved for the PDGA sanctioned events... not something of this nature.
I really think whomever told the TD I shouldn't play should be ashamed of themselves. Does winning/placing in this event mean that much to you?
I'll show you how much the money/placing means to me... if you guys change your minds, and let Shane and I play, and for some LUCKY, UNLIKELY reason, we win this thing, I will officially donate my half of the winnings to any Kansas disc golf charity. That is a promise, and even though it's not going to happen (we will not win this thing), I would love to have the opportunity to do that.
So, in closing, I am guaranteeing you all my skills have diminished to 930 or under, and Shane and I by no means have an unfair advantage. I want to come out and have some fun, and see old friends. In addition, (again, it's not going to happen) if we get 1st place, I will give all my half of the money to Kansas disc golf charity... every penny.
I urge you all to reconsider.... I was super excited about this tournament, and anxious to get out and throw some plastic.
Sincerely, Jon

Re: 1880 Doubles Oct 29th
Think about how much effort Brandon has put into creating these K-ratings. Just look at the shear size of that document. When no recent tournament rounds are used, the last PDGA rating is the best estimate. Why would you expect him to give one team a 40+ point advantage? Seems like that takes away from the number one goal of this tournament, which is creating a one-division doubles tournament that is fair to all players.
