The Last Redbud Open. April 14th.
Have I said this before? Looks like it is for real this time. I'm just glad I get to play this tournament one more time.
Rick is helping Ted present this last tournament at Ted's Dread. He sent me and everyone else who played last year an email about the event with a pdf file of a letter from Ted and a registration form. I thought I'd let all of you guys in on this one.
Let me know if your interested and I'll email you the PDF attachment. I can't copy it here. The invitation was pretty detailed, but I'll try to give you the gist now....
It is on Saturday, April 14th. Kansas City, KS on Ted's private property which has already been sold. The course will be pulled after the weekend. Entry is $50 for the open division and $35 for all other divisions. The entry includes camping and two barbeque meals on Saturday. It also includes a full color commemorative Roc. For non-players, $12 covers the meals and the camping.
The course will be open on Friday at 2pm. There will be glow doubles Friday night. 2 rounds of intense golf on Saturday. Typically they have played the course short tees and short pins first round followed by long-long. Meals of bratwurst, ribs, chicken and brisket for lunch and dinner on Saturday. Format to be determined for the last hurrah on Sunday.
I'm almost certain the field will fill this year, so if you want to play, you better preregister. The tourney is not being publicized yet (except by me) so if you wait to hear that it is full, it may be too late.
This is the one I've been trying to sell to you all for years. Just like Waterworks, I've been in awe of this course since the first time I played it. This is my favorite tournament, hands down.
The course is one of a kind, and a blueprint of what kind of features the challenging courses of the future should provide for us. It has lots of elevation changes, sometimes major, on almost every hole. Multiple route holes. Doglegs through the woods (includes road sign). Water shots. Mostly open shots. Insane tunnel shots. Over the top shots. Every shot in your bag.
Overall the course plays pretty long. I lost my course evaluation file I did on it, so I can't tell you exactly, but somewhere around 8000' for the longest config. There are plenty of reachable holes though, with a few under 250'. The longest holes are bigtime downhill and very fun. The best thing is the big range of scores that are possible on almost every hole. At least half of the holes on this course have become "instant classics" for me. #14 downhill gently turning hole that goes forever through the trees is probably my favorite. #1 is a little crazy. A long pinball shot through the trees that gives scores from 2 to 7. I could go on and on... There are not many courses like this anywhere, let alone right here in Kansas. This course will give you some ideas of what a paradise you could make out of your own back yard if you aquired the right land...
The course has 5 holes with alt. tees and 13 holes with alt. pins. 3 holes don't change and 3 holes have both. I said once that the par on this course is 60 for the shortest setup and 70 for the longest. I took the Scratch Scoring Average last year from Chuck Kennedy's Template Calculation. The SSA was 57 for the shorts and 64 from the longs. Remember this is for 1000 rated players. The wind was down and so was an OB fence on a couple of the holes. 950 rated golf would be approx. par 60 and 70, which is better than the average golfer. In his letter, Ted challenges you to shoot better than 54 as he claims it has never been accomplished.
Other than the golf, the tournament is worth attending just for the grub and the comeradery. Wood'z puts on the best barbeque you will ever experience. Otto, Bruce, and the KC crew are great fun folks to camp out with. The camping is outstanding. The place is peaceful at night with the frogs and sounds of nature in spring abounding.
Not so peaceful, last year we had an intense hail storm that came before any rain! The sound of it approaching before we got caught up in it was something else. Several tornadoes in that storm that came pretty close. We could see funneling clouds coming straight for us when the lightning would flash. Talk about terrifying!
Anyways, some of you golf fanatics have got to come to Ted's this (last)year. Babbit needs somebody to challenge him or he'll be walking away with the etched glass champions plate yet again.
Just let me know if anyone wants that registration form. I'm going to take the family and camp and have already sent my $ in. If you want to go straight to the source for directions or whatever, call or email Rick Rothstein

This year I think it really might fill up. It certainly deserves a full field to enjoy this layout one last event.
I'll be there... but don't let that keep you from showing up.....

Tourney almost full
I called and signed up for this tournament today (4-10-07) about 12:00pm today. They told me that there was currently 15 spots available. I took 6 of them so that means there's only 9 left. Sign up fast if you're interested.

Who the heck know about the weather. It's only a day and a half away and it's still a toss up. Seems that way for most of the state. What will it be? Rain, snow, or shine? Looks like that it "should" be clearing up Saturday. Might be dry by tourney time.
Glow doubles still on Friday night right? Yeah right. Now that would be a gamer round! Freezing windy rain/snow golf in the dark. I elect we should play some glow on Sat. night.

I was the only camper this year. It rained hard all night Friday night but come time for the first round it was all good. No glow doubles but some fun times by the bonfire after the great grub (Ted's ribs may be the best I've ever had. No sauce, doesn't need it at all). And the camping Saturday was much better. Must have been those four discs I donated to the disc gods (the pond).
Here's the official report from Rick Rothstein:
The Redbud Open Was A Good One
The weather forecasts all looked dismal, even the ones issued eight hours
before the 2007 Redbud Open was to tee off. Instead, when 10:30 rolled
around on Saturday morning, the rain had stopped three hours earlier, the
snow and sleet never materialized, and lo and behold, the skies cleared
allowing some sun to warm things up. Thus, during the first round, the
record number of 59 players had to shed some layers as the temps pushed into
the 40s by mid-round. Even the wind cooperated, staying in the 8-10 MPH
range.
Kevin Babbit, the defending open champion, had the best score during the
first round, a 56, on this very challenging layout where every hole is
called a par 3, but in reality there are four holes‹#1, #3, #14, and
#15‹that are actually par 4s. He matched that score on the second round to
edge Arturo Villarreal by four throws. Arturo fashioned a pair of 58s. The
only other under-60 scores were posted by Mark Martin (57), Pete Cashen,
Bryan Guthrie, and Michael Schoenhopper (59), and Brad Fortman (58 ). Brad,
from St Louis, and playing the course for the first time in the morning,
improved by 12 throws to catapult from a 5th place tie to nab the am masters
championship.
All and all in was a great day, although the traditional camping party on
Friday night was killed because of the cold rain that fell all day. Ted¹s
barbecue was tasty and both kegs of Boulevard did not survive until the end
of the round.
Because of the softness in the real estate market, the developers who were
set to buy the property on which Ted¹s Dread sits never closed the deal.
Until the land sells, it¹s likely that the baskets will stay put, and there
might well be the Third Annual Last Redbud Open.
A big thank you goes out to Ted Kubicki for inviting on to us property and
allowing me to direct this event. Ted, aided mightily by Tom Sprinkle, had
the course in good shape. Thanks to Sean Gibson, Kevin Montgomery, and Kevin
Corbett for their help in scoring.

Sounds like all a ploy to try and sell out this tourney.Nivek9 wrote:Because of the softness in the real estate market, the developers who were

No wait, this is the last year, No, that was last years last year, its all about this years last year.
Gimme a break, Sell the damn land already. It's a great course, but tired of hearing all the wolf crying.
Do Work, Son!
Yeah, that's it. Busted.... Ted's gone through a divorce, put the property on the market for sale and is entertaining offers, not to mention dealing with every surrounding acre being clear-cut and populated with McMansions and apartment buildings but it's all really just a ploy to make a couple hundred extra bucks on the twenty more people that showed up this year. Wow, took a genius to figure that one out. And I'll bet he didn't make much of anything because it all went into the great food and beverages he supplied everyone with.TanK wrote:Sounds like all a ploy to try and sell out this tourney.Nivek9 wrote:Because of the softness in the real estate market, the developers who were

I say, if he is never able to sell it and the course stays there forever it's a good thing for disc golfers. Not something to whine about. Have you ever played it?
Something very similar happened in Florida at the Gran Canyon in Brookesville. I kept hearing it was being pulled and wasn't there anymore but I got to play it finally. Now I hear it truly is gone. These things happen. Have you ever tried to sell a house in Wyandotte County though?

Ya, I played it and won it. It's a very fun course and our club was gonna buy all the baskets until the asking price came to be...Nivek9 wrote:Have you ever played it?
All I have ever heard about this course was, "This is the last tourney here" and that was like 3-4 tourney ago...
It just sounds like a g'f that says she hates you and hangs up on you, and calls back 10 minutes later and says she loves you, than hangs up the phone because she hates you again...
I don't know all the reasoning behind the attempting sale but, Long live Ted's Dread...
Do Work, Son!
He really does want to sell the baskets. But we've told him that he needs to come down on the price. They aren't Ted's baskets. They are really nice baskets though, and they are still for sale if anyone is looking. I think at this point he is entertaining offers.TanK wrote:It's a very fun course and our club was gonna buy all the baskets until the asking price came to be...Nivek9 wrote:Have you ever played it?
