Cherry Street Disc Golf Championships June 26th

Post by smitty »

PDGA C-tier
KDGA double point event

You are not going to want to miss this event. Get it on you schedule now! We are going to take the normally short and easy Cherry Street Disc Golf Course and change it to a butt puckering, bag kicking, F-Bomb dropping mother of all mothers. The holes are not going to be hard because of length. The holes are going to be hard and the scores are going to be high because peoples brains are going to get in the way. We going to try and force you to think about every shot that you throw. This will be a USDGC type course (Minus the length :D) featuring 2 elevated baskets, miles of roped OB, an island green, bunkers, and many other risk/reward type shots.

The tourney will be ran in 2 different pools. This is the first time for anybody to try something like this, so times will be subject to change once we get going. The First rounds for the pools will start no earlier then the times posted. Players will be able to warm-up at Whittier elementary school less then a block from the course.

Pool A
Advanced
Intermediate
Rec
Jrs

Pool B
Pro
Masters
Grandmasters
All Women

Obviously the pools would be subject to change as registrations came in.

Pool A would play 2 rounds of 13 holes starting early in the morning (9:00 tee time)
Pool B would play 2 rounds of 13 holes mid-morning tee time (11:30) Pool A would eat BBQ lunch during this time. The lunch would be part of their players pack.
Pool A would play 1 round of 13 holes in the early afternoon (2:30) This would give B Pool a chance to get some grub.
Pool B would play a final round of 13 holes in the late afternoon (4:30)

Final round times for all groups is subject to change.

The A Pool will be able to cash out and get prizes while the B Pool is playing.

It's gonna be sweet to get three round ratings from a 1-day tournament!

Pool A would play 2 rounds of 13 holes starting early in the morning (8:00 tee time)
Pool B would play 2 rounds of 13 holes mid-morning tee time (11:00)

8am???

I'd rather declare Pro.

I'd like to see ALL tournaments go to 11am except for when darkness is an issue (Early Spring/Late Fall...)

Let Pool B go first to show us how it's done!

Somebody had to go early. 8 AM does seem pretty early, but I also didn't want people finishing in the dark. This is the first attempt at something like this (It will probably happen again in Mulvane) format. On a side note, the Pros would probably more then welcome your money err I mean you into their divisions.

Another reason for the Am pool going first is payout. While the Ams are digging around for plastic the Pros can be finishing up their tourney. It takes 3 times longer to do AM payout.

I knew it would be a guy like Smitty that would finally step up and take a chance like this for an event. :D :D .. Although there may be potential gliches to this kind of event (namely pace of play if there is a ton of O.B.) but I am positive this will start to become a regular on the tour. This can take a usually very easy golf course and turn it into a beast in a HURRY!! I cant wait!

I don't know about a "Beast", but it is going to turn it into an F-bomb dropping mother!! There will be a little learning curve to the amount of time needed to finish a round. One thing that could/should help with speed of play is we probably will not have 65 players in each pool. This will allow for some open holes, and that should help with speed of play.

Had a short discussion on the PDGA board with Chuck, and all players will for sure get three round ratings for this event.

8:00am...?

I'm 2-1/2 hours away from Cherry Street. So, have to leave S-town by 5:30... little warm-up time... some time to get my a$$ out of bed... looks like I gotta get up by 4:20 to make this one. Maybe I'll just stay up Friday night on RedBull and NoDoze!

I know the time seems extremely early. I could bounce everything back an hour. I will move everything back an hour, and the first pool will go off at 9:00.

June 21st = Summer Solstice = The longest day of the year.

So Mother Nature is workin' for ya.

The 26th will have plenty o' daylight - we could play deep into the night...

It sounds like a killer tourney.

But even if I lived across the street from the course, 8am is still a little harsh.

It's a long-azz haul for us Northerners (that I'm quite willing to make.)
but with a 8am/9am tee time, getting basically no good sleep.

Then trying to play and enjoy the day. (and night.)

Is there camping allowed down there?

I might have to go that route.

I aint gonna be on any road with Phil on Redbull & NoDoze.

There is camping down at the fair grounds or out at the lake. The fair ground are about 5 minutes from the course and the lake is about 15 minutes from the course. Both charge a small fee for camping in a tent.

Camping will not be a problem. I would suggest using the fairgrounds for sure.

9:00 is as late as I am going to start the first pool. Next time around I will be able to adjust the start time if needed.

Wellington is on Sunday, so I would think that camping would really be the way to go. Kind of make a disc golf camping weekend out of the deal.
