2011 Oz Tour Points Update

For the benefit of members new to the KDGA, an explanation on how tour points are calculated. No planned changes from last year.

-Each year, there are 8 or more Food Drive / Ice Bowl events that start off the season. These events are worth 10 points each for attending. To get points for any of these events in the first part of the season, one must sign up on or before the final Food Drive event, which is the Winfield Food Drive this year, on March 5th. Whenever you sign up, in order to get points for past events, please list what KDGA events you attended prior to signing up.

-The second of three parts of the season runs through the KS state championships in Beloit, on July 23 & 24 this year. Sign up on or before Beloit to receive points for any events played from March 6th on. This second third is the bulk of the season. I encourage everyone to sign up / renew early in the season to make it easier and faster to calculate the points. The reason for the Beloit cut off is: 1) To limit the amount of time figuring retroactive points. 2) To limit the amount of points one can earn for signing up in the last part of the season. While people can earn bids to the final via last chance tournament bids, it isn't fair to the players who led the tour all year to get beat out by someone who signs up at the end of the season.

-The last third of the season is from Beloit until the Finals, which is likely on November 13th this year. (A free tournament at the end of the season for those 50+ players who qualify. Much, much cash put into this event.) Players joining the KDGA during this period can get points for events in this part of the season, but not for events before Beloit.



*For the standard events after the Ice Bowl season, a player earns 1 point for attending and 1 point for each KDGA member that they score lower than in the final results. Each of the 5 regions of Kansas are granted 3 events (which had the highest attendance in the previous year) to be Super Tour events. These 15 events earn double or triple points. The 6 two-day events on the tour earn triple points and the other 9 earn double points.

*Sometimes the points don't seem to add up correctly from event to event. A couple of possible reasons for this. Sometimes players signing up later in the season earn retroactive points for previous events attended, which can affect other player's point totals as well. Also, there is a "half-point" system in place. If players tie at an event, they get the average of the point totals they would have got had they ranked consecutively. For example, in an event where 2 players both beat 10 players, they would get 10.5 points each. If 3 players tie beating 10 other players, they get 10 each. 4 players tie, it is 9.5 each. This way, players are not awarded (or losing) "bonus" points for incidentally resulting in a tie with another player. All half point totals are rounded up automatically.

*Points can be used to qualify for the end of the season Final event (see qualifying rules posted in another thread). Top 3 players in each division have traditionally earned a nice trophy following the season. The Kassner Cup goes to the Tour Champion!

Guess what... The points file is dead!

When I last tried to open it, I got the message from Excel: "file format is not valid". I cannot get it to open no matter what I've tried. And I do not have this one saved elsewhere. I was just about to back it up too.

From what I've read so far, the data must have been corrupted at the last save, and a recovery program must be run on the file. You have to buy these unless someone has one. If not, this is going to take hours and hours to re-create.
