Holes 1-6 = best shot
Holes 7-12 = worst shot
Holes 8-18 = alternate shot

My favorite doubles format is Switch doubles, where partners swap lies after the drive and finish the hole seperately, taking the best score between the two.
Worst shot is only good for pro-pro teams or very short courses.
Alternate shot is okay, but you a team should be able to decide who is driving the even holes and who the odd. If there is an ace fund, having both partners drive and alternate after the pick is a more popular option, though that isn't really alternate shot.
I'm a fan of total score doubles. Add both teamates scores together for a hole and compare it to the other teams score. Play it either like skins where a tie pushes or play it like match play where most holes won is all that matters. Or you could play it where you add up your singles scores for the whole round and add that to your partners score and compare it to the team you are playing.
