A course on the east side

Post by Bonz »

My wife works at the Wichita clinic in founders circle. I went out there with her and we took the turn pike back. Don't know the name of the park, but one side sets against the turn pike, one side against lincoln, one end against woodlawn, and the other against Rock. It's empty for the most part. Would be of anyone elses interest. I had also thought about a course in Haysville at Rigs park.

The park your talking of is Cessna. It had tone-poles there (tho, only a few were left) when i first started playing. Ring, Lou and I made an object course there at one time. Yes the park would be PERFECT for a 9-hole course but not sure the city had any interest in another course in ICT.

Another course in Wichita would be good, period! On any given nice day at oak park it will be crowded and backed up. More and more people I know are getting into the sport and I'm sure the same is true for a lot of people.

Harrison doesn't have room for one hole. Heavy traffic and a walking path going all around the perimeter of the park.

I want to check further into possible future courses for Wichita. We still haven't been able to set up the meeting with the Parks department. I keep getting promises that we will do this though.

I haven't checked into some of those parks on the West side that I heard people proposing. Was it Swanson Park & Pawnee Prairie? It would be good to walk the place looking from a designers point of view to see if the potential is really there before suggesting specific parks for disc golf. I'm guessing that the city's PROC plan involves making new parks with land around the perimeter of Wichita and using one of them for disc golf. The problem we will have is that they will likely be featureless (no trees) and take years to develop. That's just my guess though.

I realize the ACDGC hasn't been much help with this. We've explained the situation of overcrowded Oak Park, but just to a few people. If someone has some ideas, or knows some movers or shakers, run it by me and we will see what we can come up with. Most of us on the board have some busy schedules, so there hasn't been a lot of time for us to explore opportunities. So it could take some help.

To make things more difficult, the parks budget has been severly cut, with more cuts coming in 2010. So it's difficult to get anything right now.

You know mike thats not a bad thing. If the land has no trees at all you can Dige and move earth around making land features too. Som burms and small hills to a compleatly flat area. Then plant the trees where you want. Sure it may not be a great disc course in our life time but could you imagine what it would be like to totaly sculpt a disc golf course from the raw earth. wow that would be cool.

Good luck getting the city to spend money on creating all those features with the cuts they're facing... =-\

Well I was thinking we could do it our selves if the city would allow us to. If any one knows of some one with a tracktor with a bucket and a back hoe That is willing to loan us or at least rent it cheep when the time come I can opperate one if we have a plan and go and mark it all off it would be a snap.

Some one said somethin to me about some land that the city had just bought, over 100 acres worth, that on part of it they were going to build a school. maybe we could talk to them about the rest of the land. It's on the north east side from what I understand.
