New Course at Camp Horizon

I am an Intern at Camp Horizon and I am going to Horizon's board meeting Monday March 31st to propose the installation of a 9-hole disc golf course.

Does anyone have suggestions on what baskets I should ask for and where I should order them from? I need to have the sleeves by April 11th because that weekend we are going to install the baskets (assuming the board approves). And I can't order the baskets till April 1st. Also, does anyone know the best way to get a bunch of cheap DX plastic for the camp?

We are having a Men's retreat April 11th and 12th at Horizon and I hope to make the installation of the disc golf course our main activity. If you want to know more about the retreat let me know.

Camp Horizon is a Methodist Summer Camp and year-round retreat center. It is located 7 miles east of Ark City. The course will be similar to Camp Quaker Haven only with more wooded shots. Although the design of the course is not set in stone yet.

I've never ordered baskets, so I can't speak for the prices too much. I think Mach 3's or 5's (better and more expensive) are great baskets that look good too. The bright yellow discatchers are good baskets, but don't look quite as good in my opinion. However, if this is a wooded course, this would be a great option as these are much easier to see with an obscured shot from the tee.

On the course design, I would certainly consult an expert. Bill Paulson has valuable experience in this area. Smitty has good ideas on course design as well. If this course is going to be used 95% of the time by rec players, you may want all short holes. If you want a course you can hold a tournament on, you should target the advanced division for the design. Or, you can have the best of both worlds and put in two distinctly different sets of tees. That would also make an 18 hole round possible.

I really think that the DGA New Mach II are the best bang for the buck. They seem nearly as nice as the Mach V (One of the best out there). Plus, you get a free basket when you order nine, which brings down the cost per basket.

I read reviews about lightening baskets, and they reviews weren't too good, especially if you didn't spend the extra $$$ to add extra chains, which most recommended.

I think that Dennis at Discs Unlimited might be the best bet for Innova plastic, as Innova doesn't like to sell to unauthorized dealers.

Discraft posts prices right on their website, $4/Disc for Pro D plastic, I doubt you'll find much cheaper than buying directly from them.

Oh, and at discraft for just $ .50 more per disc, you can get custom hot stamps.

Also, if you are going to order baskets, I think ordering directly from the manufacturer is best, cuts out the middle man. Dealers don't really seem to get large discounts on targets like they do on discs.

Most of us have used my Lighning basket and I haven't heard any complaints about it yet.....and it still only has one set of chains. I got it for like $185 shipped to my door and it came with 2 discs.

Review: I just purchased the DB-5 for well under $200 shipped. Assembly/Breakdown is/was a cinch and fits together very well. There is no center ring of chains however adding on the inners would be real easy. The outside 18 chains are quite stiff right out of the box and have had a few dead ringers get tossed out. All in all the basket makes a great backyard basket as its handled the weather fairly well. This may not be the best basket on the market however for under $200 shipped, its a steal. I highly recommend if you want a decent backyard basket. And i do recommend adding the inner chains as well.

I just don't think it's the best "low-price" permanent basket out there.

If you are looking for an easy to assemble (no tools required), semi-portable, practice putting basket, this is the basket that we would recommend first. Lightning did their homework, improved on their original design, and has created an ideal practice basket.

Ransom has Mach 2 news and they aren't bad. The Chainstar is also a great basket.

Rusco or Dennis would be the way to go for baskets.

You can also get a good selection of "low end" discs from either of them.

I guess who I go through for the baskets will depend on who can get me the baskets the soonest, or at least get me the sleeves.

You could always just get a few sleeves made here in town. There really is very little to them. Then you could use the other 9 sleeves for alternate locations.

When do I get to come and look at your little chunk of land?

Yeah, the sleeves are just 2" I.D. pipe for the New Mach II's, you can look at the specs page. Making them would be really easy.

Umm sorry, but the parks dept in A.C. blows. They don't even have a park big enough to hold a 6 hole course.....The only land they wanna give up is in the flood plain and under water at least 4 months a year.....

The board approved the course. April 12th we are going to be installing 9 Mach II baskets at camp horizon. Plan to come check it out sometime. www.horizoncenter.org

That place looks awesome. I went to a summer camp down there when I was young and so did Plamen. I forgot the name, so I wonder if that is the same one.

What did you figure out in terms of a design? Looks like awesome terrain. One thing you may have thought of already... It is a lot easier and better to do long tees later if you incorporate them into the design now.

What is with that high ropes course and such? Looks pretty crazy.
