Re: Derby Course
Usually, I'd agree with that, but this hole is a bit unreasonable. We may eventually see some changes here. We'll need to change OB for the hole no matter what happens. No more playing in yards. And we'll need a drop zone.

Re: Derby Course
Couldn't agree more Smitty!! If you left a disc in there and didn't bother to go in, is it right that someone else should do the dirty work for you and not be rewarded for it??? If you love the disc that much, go in, sing Taps as she flies into the water, or DONT THROW IT OVER A POND.......17 is the best hole on that course!!!!

Re: Derby Course
Agreed. If they are willing to go for a swim when many others clearly wouldn't, then they have every right to those discs. It would be nice of them to call the numbers on the discs but you can't expect everyone to do so. I understand the anger though. I've seen discs I've lost in water get pulled out by other people. I wasn't willing to go in so I offer to buy them a disc in exchange or tell them to keep it.
17 is still ridiculous. I've only thrown it twice without either going deep in the brush or watching a beautiful drive roll into the water. Luckily there is usually a nice long stick to help me get them back. Every course needs a challenging hole but the slope into the pond is a bit much.

Re: Derby Course
I would have went in to get mine but didnt know if the City of Derby would approve? And if a bunch of people are swimming around in there, would the home owners in the area turn us in, and decide to remove the Disc Golf Course?
I know we go in at Oak and so far that hasnt happened, but maybe they figure if you get in THAT water? Good Luck..
I also said "If there willing to get in and find them, I would give 5 bucks a disc for mine...
Hey...thanks for the info anyway Smitty, Ill go see what I can buy back..... or trade, I think I have a non-working treadmill?

Re: Derby Course
As far as the other comments: I dont have special disc anymore, just new ones that I just payed 13 to 20 dollars for. And hole 17 IMO sucks!!!! Yea most can throw there first shot safe, and then the next two to get par, my prob is that I just cant get myself to throw short safe..lol I wanna launch that mofo...I really didnt think anything was wrong with the first set-up for holes 16 and 17. I liked the dyke shot and I liked 17 the way it was.. I mean you have 14...super long and you have 18 super long.so.... Anywho I dont play club or tournments anymore so my opinion doesnt really count... Its you guys that play those all the time..Derby is just close to my house, now my favorite hole at Derby is along the creek heading back south. Thats a good challange, and a lot less chance to lose a disc... Everyone have a great weekend, Ill be going to the air-show Saturday at Jabarra Airport Webb/96 highway
Re: Derby Course
If Bryce has any of the discs next time I see him, I will let him know you pay him $5 for them 2. It may be cheaper for you to trade of some old discs. Problem will be hooking up with him to make the trade.

Re: Derby Course
For those of you who say " it just 17 bucks get over it" 17 bucks in today economy is getting steep. My checks haven't gotten bigger for the last 3 years. the wifes hours have been cut and ferlows and lay offs this year have killed us. I can't afford to go to tourneys and league like i used too. But its still not the money issue since I my self have not lost a disc in the derby pond yet. I do agree the slope is what makes that hole unfair. The width of the far way is fine if it didn't have that slope.
I also am one of those who will pay for my disc back. I have traded new dyed discs to people who have given me a disc back I have lost and have no problem of handing over a $5 bill for my disc back. If I did lose one in the pond i dont know if I would go in for it though. Not because I am worried about what the people that live around the pond might think. who cares what they think. My worry is Whats in that pond. I wear boots when i play because i don't ride the bike with out boots. never have never will. There is no way I am going in with my boots on. But I don't know if I could go in with out . Whats in there ? Snapping turtles, snakes, glass or rusty old junk? If I had old tennis shoes on i would go in after the discs with out pause. but not bare foot. I have been thinking of getting some water shoes that are light and would take up maybe half a disc bag pocket to bring with . if any one has ideas of where to find some thing like that let me know. hell I would search for discs in the ponds for the club if I could find something like that.

Re: Derby Course
Hate the argument that the slope is the unfair part. The hole is actually really similar to the 17th at Oak (even steeper slope that also rolls into a hazard BOTH directions and a very small safe landing area) except for me the 17th at Derby is much easier because if I can throw a good shot I can make birdie there. I have thrown many great shots that have rolled into the creek or river on that hole too (17 @ Oak). Granted you can usually get it back from that creek but that water is nasty too, and I have left a junk frisbee lay there a few times....Just me, but I've played Derby 4 times and have never lost a disc and have birdied 17 twice, and have bogied once. I've played 17 at oak (similar distance, only ALOT more challenging tee shot) for 10 years, maybe birdied it once or twice and have countless 4's,5's and 6's......just my opinion

Re: Derby Course
It's not really a tough hole at all for a righty that can throw 400'. In fact, it kind of lacks challenge for long throwers.

Re: Derby Course
Where on earth are you guys paying 17 bucks for discs? And have you heard of economy plastic by chance?
Re: Derby Course
Thanks smitty, Ive only lost two in there...hey the "Flight Fest was AWSOME!!! Jet powered out house-jet powered Dodge truck- jet powered dragster-red bull MIG-hot chic wing walker...and it was FREE both days. Did I mention hot chic wing walker? Saturday nite I sat on my tail-gate on a dead end road that backed up to Jabarra and watched the MIG fly around with fireworks strapped to its wings.... With drink in one hand and hooter in the other, I think I crapped myself!!! I know- TM I

Re: Derby Course
LAst few I've bought were 25 per, that's besides the point though. You get what you pay for and economy plastic just doesn't do it for me. You won't get better skipping holes because your scared to lose some plastic, sure it's intimidating, but confidence will take you places.

Re: Derby Course
I think alot of people who have played for several years tend to forget a few of the things that drew them to the game. When we all started out the fact that you could invest in just 2-3 discs and not have to pay a greens fee to play was a huge plus. When you first start out in any sport or hobbie you don't want to invest alot of money and You don't want to lose equipment every time you play "Your new sport".
Some of these new discers are from Derby and may not even know about other courses in wichita, mulvane, wellington or winfield. Many of the new players may not have cars or be old enought to drive and just can't get to other courses. Many of these new players Just can't afford 17 bucks when thats close to their whole allowance they get each week. Many of these new players are kids we "wichita club with help of others" taught the game to during the derby clinic.
Like I said I haven't lost a disc in the pond.......yet. I know mike (hopper) hasn'e either. Sorry mike i just can't remeber how to spell your last name. But we remember what its like to be new at the game. I remember because i bring alot of new people to the game and take them around to differnt course. I like derby. I even kinda like the challage of a tight fairway like 17. But i do not like the fact that none of the new guys I play with WILL NOT PLAY DERBY AGAIN. They have been discouraged by the design of the pond holes. They like 15 better than they do 17. One of the guys (name will be left out) liked derby when that hole was short and liked playing there, Now he won't go back.
Like it has been mentioned, There is already a couple really good long holes. There is also already a couple really intimidating holes useing both water and Trees. I don't think the Derby course will lose any thing by redesigning hole 17 and 16 back to the way it was before. Don't do it for us the seasoned player, do it for the new players, they are our future in disc golf.
