Trees in Disc Golf Parks

Post by Schoen-hopper »

I met with the city with the situation at Herman Hill. Several trees are marked to come out. Mostly pines in the 2 & 4/8 area. Likely will be more next year. We've been losing a few every year to the blight. Nothing that can be done. Except plant new trees. And that's what is being planned. We'll get in early on the reserve list for trees next year. I want to look long term and try to make sure that the course design doesn't suffer. We planted a dozen or so last year that will help a great deal in a couple more years.

It sucks to lose trees. I probably hate it as much as anybody. The parks dept is really positive with wanting to work with us. So I look at it as an opportunity. If anyone has any ideas before this next winter's planting, hit me up personally.

Wiggins suggested trees along the river on hole 6. It could save a stroke on some errant throws. Speaking of errant throws, watch Friz Rocker almost take out a gaggle.

That's what I want to push for. These get spoken for quickly, but I want to make sure they know early that this is what we want. If they give us other trees, it will be years before they are a factor.

I know . Have you seen the groth in the pines off of the short tee #1 at oak. in about two more years those are going to be a pain in the butt for beginners. The new pines also on #16 are really growing fast too. . I think the pines at herman hill will be the best way to go just as long as we don't over do it. They don't work every where but if in the right place they can be a big factor in how you play the hole.

Parks Dept trimmed that hedge tree that was in the way on hole #11, in front of the short tee. They also trimmed 18. I asked for one limb, hoping there would be more visibility and a small over the bush and under the limb shot. Instead, the tree was raised all the way to the top and now the hole is almost wide open.

More trees came out on 4 & 8. Hole 8 now has two new routes way easier than the hyzer tunnel. Straight at it low or over the top. I went over the top for my shot today and nearly aced it. We will be suggesting some trees in this area and on hole 2 over the winter for sure. The parks dept sounds like they want to help us.

The city was doubtful they would get any trees in the budget this year. But they did end up getting some. So I spent some time looking at the long term projection for our Herman Hill course and thought of a few locations that would be of the most use to us. I met with them and succeeded at getting over 20 locations marked for planting. It may not seem like we need them now, but when the rest of our pines are removed, hopefully we'll have a headstart, though it will take 5-10 years before these really make a lot of difference. Next year, there will not be any trees in the budget (usually there are around 2000)! We were really lucky. The city admits that trees are coming out everywhere faster than they can replace them. And with no trees in the budget, over the next year or so, demand will be up. Tried to get a few at Oak for those removed on 8, 13, 17, 18. No go for this year.

Good question, I'm not sure. It would have to be convenient for them to put in. Like when they are already coming out to do that. As far as locations, they have to be approved by the mow crew supervisor.

I like the Idea that they have going i English park in mulavane. People can donate a tree . or at least donate the cost of a tree and they even get a small plaque planted next to the tree on a post. I could probably scrounge up a bunch of tree donations from both the vet group i belong to and biker group i associate with . both kinda one and the same. But they would want to be able to memorialize each tree donated.

I'm not sure a plaque would last seeing as how the baskets at oak are beginning to be vandalized, I don't think the people of Wichita have the same respect for oak as the community of mulvane does for English.
