Oaklawn Fall Festival, 09/19/09

Post by Schoen-hopper »

This is on a Saturday. Same day as Hutch, and day before our Ace Race. They start their parade around 10am and go all day with fireworks in the evening.

For them letting us use their facility for free for our Ice Bowl tournament, we agreed to run a disc golf CLINIC at their fall fest.

Last year Jack bailed me out and brought a table, pop-up tent, a couple banners, a couple baskets. I brought my own discs and Plamen. Our spot was out of the way to avoid interferece and the crowd was mostly kids.

We need people who can bring stuff and / or help. Ideas with a format for the clinic would be good. People said they didn't know about this last year, so I wanted to get the word out early. What can we do that would be valuable for this?

First lets see if we can get our stand set up almost across the drive from the north side of the building not in a fenced in area. Where we were last year restricted us from doing any thing other than what we did. Last year we had enough baskets there that we could have left one as a practice basket and used a couple, say three baskets to set up a mini pitch and putt course. . Bring some flags to set up tee boxes (I have a couple). Give the people two discs to practice with and send them out in groups of four with a guide or instructor (this is also to make sure the discs don't disapear). The help we would need then is three guides plus a couple people to stay up front with the pamplets and discs and practice basket. . If We are going to run a clinic to teach disc golf, lets teach them. You don't really learn the game unless you play it. Teach them how to Drive, Upshots and putt. Plus teach them the rules of the game and disc golf ettiquite.

If we set the mini course up away from the festivale and away from real hazzards like water or thick brush . Find a place that may have a tree or two in each fairway . i think people will get al lot better idea of what the game is really like. Why settle for an indoor style display and clinic when we have the great out doors. If you wanna do a real clinic this year i will help . but standing around a couple of baskets and just tossing some discs at a basket in a 100 foot circle isn't realy teaching any thing ... let do it up we have the space out there.

I don't want to sound like i am trying to take over the clinic or control any thing . I just wanted to give my suggestions and share my ideas. . This is your deal and I am avalable to help if you need me.

Can anybody show up to help with this clinic?

We need volunteers, some baskets/supplies, and a game plan. Sounds like Mike will not be available until that evening. If we can get some people committed, we can get started planning this. Please help!

I would like to have a meeting of the minds about this clinic after league on Thursday. If you aren't playing league, but can help with the clinic, please meet with me (Miranda) around 8pm at Oak.

It should be a short meeting discussing the time frame, format and getting the supplies to the right place. We'd really appreciate all the help we can get. Please

We will meet at Oaklawn at 3. We'll be trying to setup where the Ice Bowl course was (a more prime location). The plan is to have a putting basket & if there's room, we can set up a couple baskets to drive at. We'll teach the basics, driving, putting and etiquette. I'll be picking up equipment from the clubhouse (flags, banners,& putters). Jack will show up @ 3 with a tent & other stuff.

The park is located on 47th between K-15 and Hydralic on the south side of the street. I was able to pick up a few more helpers, but if anyone has some free time Saturday afternoon, please come help.

If you have any questions, you can call me 633-2446.

Thank you,
Miranda

PS: Lizard, I sent you a PM
