Peter Pan Park
My girlfriend wanted to go to the park, so we went out and I played the "new" layout.... minus pins, yesterday.McCabe wrote:The "new" Peter will be playable tomorrow!
All in all, I wasn't horribly thrilled. I liked a couple of the new holes, but overall, i think the course lost some of its charecter. Like 8 and 9 seem kinda silly now, where as before, if you didn't play them right, you were guaranteed to struggle. I understand from a layout/flow perspective why they were moved... It just doesn't seem like as much fun...especially from a charecter (IE: originality/natural obstacles) standpoint.
I was extremely dissapointed by the dividing of 13 into 13 & 14. That was a great long hole, that's now 2 easy short holes. If anything, Id have left the old 13, 14 and 15, as I think in the end, they were at least a bit more challenging than the new layout. The new 15 is long but I made it there in 2, putt for 3, and Im not that long of a driver. Id say the old 13 was a more difficult long hole.
A lot of the course felt like playing the jones east course (12,13,14,15), which I guess is cool for those people who like to drive in the open all the time (and watch their disc soar), but it tends to bore those of us who like a little punishment from obstacles.
anyways, just thought Id post a few early impressions. Hope to play it a few times this next week or two... see if some new impressions develop.
PS: Hole 16 makes Rice Park look difficult
PPS: Hole 12 is ridiculously dangerous. It's shooting right next to a picnic area. Is the city going to move that picnic area, so no one gets hit while eating, or are golfers just responsible for not throwing towards a picnic area?

First off, Hole 8, and 9 on the "old" layout were the worst holes EVER! No true shot to the hole! Much better holes now, 8 is bad ass with the basket hidden behind the two trees!
Second, Hole 13, and 14 were supposed to be a little different than they are now, but the City had a problem with our original layout, so we moved it the best we could.
Third, You would have left holes 14, 15 the same??? Are you kidding me? Those were worthless!
Forth,
Fifth,
Sixth,

What? Not even close to the same, there are still technical shots all over the Peter!"A lot like playing Jones East"
Fifth,
Now I know your crazy! Hole 16 is a sweet little turnover putter shot, that will be heavily guarded in the spring and summer time!"Hole 16 makes Rice Park look difficult Rice Park is the only place I'd driven with a Rhyno before yesterday."
Sixth,

my thoughts on the course go like this:
the originals on 1-4 were all easy birdies....we made one a more technical shot by moving the tee to block the hyzer. two will probably average at least a full stroke tougher than the original. three is going to play about the same by score but i love the new look to the hole. 4 will add at least 1.5 and maybe even two strokes to the scoring average, that hole is bad a$$! 450-500 dogleg right the whole way! 5 and 6 will both be birds in their new layout but both have danger that could easily translate into bogeys. plus that section of the course will flow MUCH better. 7 we only moved the tee pad 30 feet. we might play an alternate pin in the tourney on that hole! hole 8 and 9 original were both poor tee locations. both have been moved to more open and safer areas(no tree roots). 8 will also have an alt. pin for the tourney(it is the Monkey Island Open after all!) i don't think that either is an open hole; there is plenty of tree hazard on both fairways. 10-11 will stay the same. Our design for 12-14 was better than what we ended up with, but the city thought it would be better to entirely avoid that picnic table. 12 will be a tough birdie as it is on the edge of a mid, but a driver could find its way to the pond. 13 i have not thrown but would assume that a decent range hyzer should get the job done. 14 is not what we wanted and hope that we can get it modified. we have two alternate locations for the pin on that hole that will both make the hole more difficult. 15 is a great hole. only the bombers can hope to drive the green while an errant drive could take them into the trees. Everyone else will be forced to use an approach; i believe this is the definition of par 4 golf. 16 is a beautiful hole. can't see the basket from the tee; sloping green; dogleg right. sounds good to me. and 17-18 will be the same. in all i am going to guess that my scoring average on the new course should go up at least three strokes. along with the smoother flow, i think the design is much improved.

That was posted Tuesday, can you tell me if they finished today? Me and a buddy are heading down from KC tomorrow to play Peter Pan, and one of the Jones Park courses which leads me to my next question. If we only have time to play one Jones Park which one is the must play?McCabe wrote:The "new" Peter will be playable tomorrow!
