Yep!! This is true. This is what Disc golf needs to be..Who wants to play a "birdiefest" course?Fagan wrote:I don't care who idea it was "If you build a championship style course they will come".

Very True. Birdfest courses are a dime a dozen. Designing more of them would be a step backward and not towards disc golf's future. You wouldn't attract any people to Wellington this way. Disc golf should not be a par 2 game. If there are players that insist that it should be, they can make up their own safari style way to play the course.
One thing you can do that only adds to a course's value is set up amateur tees. The design works much better, however, if you set the pro tees first. Their is always room to add tees up ahead of long pads, but installing long pads as an afterthought to a short course doesn't usually work well.

The Cannolis, and only if you tee off standing on your head or something stupid like that.McCabe wrote:Yep!! This is true. This is what Disc golf needs to be..Who wants to play a "birdiefest" course?Fagan wrote:I don't care who idea it was "If you build a championship style course they will come".

Okay this is where I will keep the updates going and share ideas with you all. One idea that shelly from the chamber of commerce came up with is the first or second weekend after school starts here is to have a disc golf lesson day for kids and their parents. By having it after school start we can use the school as a place to advertise it with flyers and such. the commerce will also help advertise along with the local paper and cable channel. along with the lessons on playing disc golf we could then have a mini tourney. maybe a parent and child doubles best shot. have three or four divisions buy age of the child. give out a cheep disc to all the kids and some nice plastic as prizes for the top teams in each division. it would be a way to make some money for the baskets if they aren't already in by then . if they are we could use the money for tee pads or improvements. maybe alternate pin placement posts.

It all sounds great Lizard only 1 problem, you still need baskets to have a mini tourney.
I have tried this clinic thing in the past with the Rec. Center in DC. They were excited about it, and bought 50 DX sharks from Dennis. The first time it came around, there was 1 middle aged lady and her son. The next time it was the same lady and son, plus 2 other people that were in the park that day.
They still have the sharks. If you are ever in DC, and need a shark. Go to the Rec center and they will loan you 1.

We have put on two such clinics in Mulvane and have had great turn outs both times (20+, 15+). The one question I have is that you said it would be a way to raise money for the baskets, so are saying you are going to charge for the clinic, or the tourney? If it’s not free I think you might have very few show up. On the other hand the cheap discs and nice discs that you talked about, where are these coming from? It’s going to be hard for any vender to just give you 50 dx discs with no money in return. Just a few thoughts

First of all... great job Lizard, you're a highly motivated individual that has taken more than your share of abuse on this forum but you've taken it like a man and are still going strong. Secondly... Your last post was a vast improvement over your previous ones. It was well thought out with minimal spelling and grammatical errors, so hats off to you on that as well.
That being said, I still think the Wellington chamber of commerce and city council or whatever is still getting ahead of themselves by already wanting to plan events and start a league before a course actually exists. Convince them to order the first 9 baskets and get them in the ground. At that point, all the fundraising and community awareness crap can take place and you'll start getting your base pool of local casual players coming out there that you can start recruiting to establish your club.

well another article in the Wellington paper today. This one was about our efforts to raise money for the disc golf course. and a plea for help sponsoring holes. also the wellington to day show also had a segment where they mentioned the sponsorship of a hole. so the word is getting out. i have been keeping in contact with both and asking them to do this so all look well here.

Lizard, I have one question how many disc golfers live in Wellington?
I think that it is great to have the course put in but, all I hear is the club.
What is it The Lizard Dics Golf Club or do you have more members. Personally I worked over there for a long time and I have only met 2 and one of them I intruduced to the game.

Are you going to pull that Smoke Wagon or stand there and bleed
