I'm hoping the weather tomorrow doesn't suck. I'm planning to try to get out to the grove to check out the handicap league. I see that Smitty wasn't planning on being there. Hopefully there will be a good turnout.

I had a pretty cool idea for figuring out average scores, and helping to set "par" at the grove. Someone could take the scorecards from each week, and input each score from each hole into an Excel spreadsheet, then you could average each "hole" (or column) into another cell. I would be willing to do it, but might need some help setting up excel.

There is already a spreadsheet that figures SSAs for any configuration. You just need to enter scores from rated players at league or whatever.

Same thing with individual holes. Ratings for the people setting it would be important. Par for what division? Most consider advanced, which is 50 rating points off 1000 rated. I think there is something like 0.3 between each 50 point ratings break in scoring average on a particular hole. So if Advanced 950 averages 2.9, 1000 rateds would be about 2.6. 850 rec players might be about 3.5.

Just to add to Mike's points, 3.3 of the 3.5 will leave a 23.45 with a 544/34.

Sure.

You need to know how many strokes seperates each division at 850, 900, 950, 1000, etc. You can tell by PDGA round ratings if you had some. That's funny: a PDGA tournament in Winfield. Usually it is 5 strokes on a SSA 50-52 set up. I'd guess the current setup might be SSA=55? Pretty tough isn't it? I haven't played it since the recent changes. Is the course still marked with signs? I read a review on dgcoursereview that people couldn't find anything and gave up. As the SSA increases, the strokes between divisions for a round also does. 5.5 wouldn't be a bad guess. Divide by 18 = .306, so the .3 per hole is probably a decent estimation. Though the tougher holes would actually be a little more, easier a little less.

If the SSA is really as high as 56 there, the adv par would be around 60 to 61, wouldn't it? It's hard to assign that many holes a par 4 status. I bet there are a lot of holes around 3.3 to 3.7 pushing this number up.

Not a bad idea Chris, my excel can automatically average what all the scores average out to be. It would be really easy to figure out what the averages are per hole. I don't know about adding all that PDGA stuff considering 90% of the people who play handicap are not PDGA members and we don't have divisons in a handicap league. We would have to have a tournament with PDGA players with divisons to figure that out . (hint hint) I 'm sure it would probaly have to be more than one tournament also. Maybe thats something to work out in the future.
The thing is though we have a lot of players who don't play as much who like coming out to play handicap because they can compete with their handicap so averaging their scores would throw off the par of the course.
Plus changing the basket locations would also change it :D :D :D

Here are some things that already average when I put scores in the spreadsheet

Average scores- 67.9
with top score and lowest score taken out- 67.4

prior score avg.-64.4
week 1-64.5
week 2-63.7
week 3-74.3
week 4-64.8
week 5-71.8

prior handicaps avg-7.1
after week 1-8.3
week 2-10.3
week 3-9.8
week 4-10.3
week 5-10.7

Average scores of advanced players and higher is 58.9
ams-69.1
novices-80.5

To answer your question Mike no there are not any tee signs out there right now but each hole is marked with something.

I will be back out there after the 1st, maybe?

With a turnout of 3 people, I think that you guys are running league exactly the way we should.

Did they cut the tree down on hole 15? There was a note on the tent the last time I played out there.
