What is up with Smitty?

Post by smitty »

Last Friday (March 5), I had surgery on my right/throwing shoulder. I had been having pain since the first of July. I tried everything I knew before the surgery Ibuprofen, Ice, Rest, Rehab, and finally surgery.

After an MRI I was diagnosed with a SLAP Lesion.

Watch here for procedure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ofAGeXKYvs This isn't me but is basically the same. I also had some work/cleaning of my rotator cuff.

Week 1

Post by smitty »

At this point I have had zero movement of the shoulder joint. I will be in a sling for as many as 6 weeks, followed by who knows how much rehab.

The pain is much less then I had imagined. A steady dose of Percocet helped get it under control. Ice and rest have helped keep it to a minimum.

At this point I don't know what my ROM is, I have been unable to test it. I do know if I try to keep my arm straight and put on a shirt I can extend it maybe 4 inches infront of me without much pain.

Shiz, that really sucketh.

No audio at work. Looks like they were tying a string around some kinda ligament. Whats a SLAP legion? You get it from throwing discs?

I hope you get better soon! I know it will not be fun to rehab or to miss out on disc golf. Maybe soon you can work on throwing lefty? :)

SLAP Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior
The cartilage in my shoulder joint between the ball and socket (labrum) was torn, on the top side from front to back. Often happens to people who fall or throw over hand. I did it throwing a long thumber, I remember the second it happen.

That "ligament" is actually the biceps tendon(muscle to bone).

I dont really know how long I am looking at. I like to think I will be doing something in June or July. Rehab is going to be very tough and most likely painful. I may play a little lefty but don't see it being a habit. The more I am around it, the more I am going to want to throw.

This will give me a chance to do some more important things like be a dad and husband.

I also plan on trying a little geocaching out.

I am sure this will all change as soon as the sun starts to shine. :D

Wow dude. I know exactly how you feel. I have had f@#ked up shoIders for years . I hope every thing goes well and you heal up fast.
I go monday to Kansas Orthopaedic center to see Dr. Chan for a consult on getting both of my shoulders done. In 95 i got caught on a side walk during a drive by shooting. It was Two gangs that just so happen to Decide to pop each other when i was out walking my dog in MPLS MN. where I am from. I caught a bullet that hit my right shoulder blade and shattered, they were able to remove most of it but because there was still peices of copper casing they have never been able to do an MRI on me.
Well they fianly felt confedent that they got the last two pieces through needle extract last month and sent me to get MRIs done . I have two tears on my left rotator cuff and a mass on my tendon Like a calcium build up. On my right I have one large tear on the rotator cuff a Slap lesion and my sholder blade where the bullet hit never healed right . so they will be fixing that also. This will be my second consult to decide if we do both shoulders at the same time or not. . I have been off work since 95 and eating pain pills like oxycodine to the point my liver is about shot. I will be glad to get this over with and off the damn pills

Isn't that what wives are for? lol yea I will more than likely have to do one at a time but i really have a hard time thinking of what it would be like to not be able to ride the bike for three months. I can deal with not being able to throw disc. as much as i like to play disc but not rideing meens No poker runs for March of dimes red cross and all the other charitys we do . No more patriot gaurd missions for fallen soilders. No parades we do for vets. Most of our riding for these events we do during the spring and early summer. I should be able to heal up for the toy runs for wichita newton and ark city but still. .
This is why i havent signed up for GBO or any other tourney cause I just don't know whats going to happen and for how long.

The sun is out, the wind not blowing, I don't have to work, a great tourney this weekend. All this and I am sitting here with a sling on. Safe to say that I have my first itch to play. :x

2 weeks down. The shoulder seems good. Still haven't been able to move it, but seems pain free. Getting ready to attend my second tourney without playing. Headed to the doctor on Monday. Maybe get the OK to start a little movement.
